Development and validation of the parental influences on kids in computer science (PIK-CS) scale
While there are many studies promoting that children and their teachers learn to code, little is known about parents’ perceptions of coding being taught to children. In this study, we developed a research-grounded scale with 39 questions across five potential parental influences on children learning to code grounded in existing literature. We administered the scale with 300 parents whose children were participating in elementary schools where cod…
Trends in tools used to teach computational thinking through elementary coding
In this study, we attempted to curate a list of tools whose primary intent is to enable and teach children to code. From this list, we developed a framework for the classification of coding tools and reviewed current research to determine how tools are used to teach coding in elementary education. The catalog grew to over 300 specific tools intended to teach coding to children. We subsequently searched Google Scholar for studies of computational …
A Case Study Perspective on Working with ProUCL and a State Environmental Agency in Determining Background Threshold Values
ProUCL is a software package made available by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide environmental scientists with better tools with which to conduct statistical analyses. ProUCL has been in production for over ten years and is in its fifth major version. In time, it has included more sophisticated and appropriate analysis tools. However, there is still substantial criticism of it among statisticians for its various omissions and e…
