  • Heterogeneity in Expectations, Risk Tolerance, and Household Stock Shares

John Ameriks, Gábor Kézdi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2020

This paper jointly estimates the relationship between stock share and expectations and risk preferences. The survey allows individual-level, quantitative estimates of risk tolerance and of the perceived mean and variance of stock returns. These estimates have economically and statistically significant association for the distribution of stock shares with relative magnitudes in proportion with the predictions of theories. Incorporating survey meas…

  • Long-Term-Care Utility and Late-in-Life Saving

John Ameriks, Joseph Briggs et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2019•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 5

Older wealth holders spend down assets much more slowly than predicted by classic life-cycle models. This paper introduces health-dependent utility into a model with incomplete markets in which preferences for bequests, expenditures when in need of long-term care, and ordinary consumption combine with health and longevity uncertainty to explain saving behavior. To sharply identify motives, it develops strategic survey questions (SSQs) that elicit…

  • How Americans Responded

    Open Access•Michael W Traugott, Michael Traugott et al.•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2002•Citada por: 16

On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, a group of social scientists at the Institute for Social Research (ISR) gathered to consider how they might employ their talents to help the country after the shocking events of that morning. The group included economists, political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, demographers, and survey methodologists. Based upon their previous research experience, each of them proposed hypotheses on asp…

  • Displaced Capital

Valerie A Ramey, Valerie Ramey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2001•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 4

Using equipment-level data from aerospace plants that closed during the 1990s, this paper studies the process of moving installed physical capital to a new use. The analysis yields three results that suggest significant sectoral specificity of physical capital and substantial costs of redeploying the capital. First, other aerospace companies are overrepresented among buyers of the used capital relative to their representation in the market for ne…

  • Costly capital reallocation and the effects of government spending

  • Risk and Return

N Gregory Mankiw, Matthew D Shapiro•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1986

Much recent work emphasizes the joint nature of the consumption decision and the portfolio allocation decision. In this paper, we compare two formulations of the Capital Asset Pricing Model. The traditional CAPM suggests that the appropriate measure of an asset's risk is the covariance of the asset's return with the market return. The consumption CAPM, on the other hand, implies that a better measure of risk is the covariance with aggregate consu…
