Promoting Individuals’ Intentions to be a Moral Rebel by Confronting Their Compliance With Morally Compromising Situations
The tendency to be a moral rebel reflects individuals' propensity to resist, oppose, and confront morally problematic situations when otherwise failing to do so would compromise their values. Because the tendency to be a moral rebel is relatively rare, the current research examines if confrontation can promote individuals' intentions to be a moral rebel. Results revealed that confrontation of individuals' compliance with morally problematic situa…
The Effects of Morally Reframed Messages on White Individuals’ Attitudes Toward White Privilege
Many White Americans are unaware of or tend to deny the existence of White privilege. One potential explanation for this denial is the belief that America functions as a meritocracy. Prior research suggests that morally reframed messages can change individuals' beliefs when the reframed messages align with their personal moral values. Contributing to the literature on morally reframed messages, the current pair of studies challenged individuals' …
Is knowledge of racial identity development necessary? White transracial adoptive parents' intentions to promote Black adoptees’ racial‐ethnic identity
Adoptions of Black children by White parents in the United States are rapidly increasing and are a frequent transracial adoptee‐parent combination. With the prevalence of these adoptions, questions arise about White parents’ capability to promote the healthy racial‐ethnic identity of their adopted Black child(ren). This study examined if White parents’ knowledge of racial‐ethnic identity development impacts their intentions to promote their adopt…
Explaining differences in Black and White students’ expected academic success
Effects of emotion-related stereotype messages on young women’s experience and expression of emotion
Role of Fault Attributions and Other Factors in Adults’ Attitudes Toward Hypothetical Children With an Undesirable Characteristic
A total of 184 adults read descriptions of six hypothetical children with various undesirable characteristics (i.e., being extremely overweight, extremely aggressive, extremely shy, a poor student, a poor athlete, displaying symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Following each description, the participants were asked to rate how much they disagree or agree that the child, the child's parents, and the child's biological condition …
Individual differences in masculine honor beliefs predict attitudes toward aggressive security measures, war, and peace
Destigmatization by Association
Second- through fourth-grade students were read a storybook that described a typical boy who interacted with an obese boy for one of four reasons (sympathy, curiosity, teacher instructed, or no reason) to explore the manner in which a typical storybook character's reason for associating with an obese storybook character influences children's responses to both characters. Results revealed that the children responded more favorably to the obese sto…
Individual Differences Associated with Emotional and Behavioral Responses to Ambiguous Social Situations in which Rejection Might be Inferred
This study sought to examine the extent to which undergraduates' experiences with and attitudes relevant to rejection may be associated with their emotional and behavioral responses to ambiguous social situations in which rejection might be inferred. Undergraduate students completed questionnaires that assessed their experiences with and attitudes relevant to being rejected. Next, each participant read six hypothetical scenarios that described va…
Role of Various Fault Attributions and Other Factors in Children's Anticipated Response to Hypothetical Peers With Undesirable Characteristics
Two studies examined the role of various fault attributions and other factors in children's anticipated response to hypothetical peers described as having an undesirable characteristic. The children were found to distinguish among various fault attributions (i.e., general, onset, and perpetuation; study 1), and they tended to agree more strongly that the peers were responsible for the perpetuation than the onset of these characteristics (studies …
Doing the Right Thing in the Face of Social Pressure
The present study investigated the self-appraisals and moral trait integration of “moral rebels” who follow their own moral convictions despite considerable social pressure to comply. Participants' moral rebel behavior was measured through a self-report inventory and a behavioral task. Results revealed that moral rebels reported: (1) less positive opinions of their own personality qualities; (2) significantly higher levels of moral trait integrat…
