  • Decalage Effects for Heating and Cooling

Open Access•Michelle Slone, Colin Tredoux et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1996•References: 9

This study investigated a horizontal décalage phenomenon in the development of children's knowledge about heating and cooling. Décalage phenomena have posed a problem to orthodox Piagetian theory and have reinforced the objection by some domain-specific theorists to the central Piagetian notion of overarching structures. The aim of this study was to contribute to this debate by empirical observation of décalage phenomena. A total of 270 children …

  • The Empirical Relationship between the Constructs of Traditional and Symbolic Racism

Open Access•Susan J Lea, Susan Lea et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 21

The theory of symbolic racism contends that white resistance to social policies such as affirmative action is rooted in prejudiced attitudes towards black people, and represents a more sophisticated form of racism than traditional or rednecked racism. However, the notion of symbolic racism has been severely criticized on theoretical and empirical grounds. The present study sought to clarify the nature of the empirical relationship between symboli…

  • Intelligence and Creative Thinking Ability in Learning to Perform a Non-Entrenched Colour-Naming Task

    Open Access•Frank D Bokhorst•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1989•References: 9

Using a non-entrenched colour-naming task originally introduced by R.J. Sternberg, information-processing analysis of performanoe by student volunteer subjects was done before and after extensive computer-assisted training. Mean response latency and error rates improved substantially after training, and the degree of change was substantially correlated with the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT). Correlations with the Cattell Culture Fair…

  • Confidence-Weighting and the Validity of Achievement Tests

    Open Access•Frank D Bokhorst•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1986

Investigated was the criterion validity of confidence-testing as applied to a multiple-choice test in introductory psychology. Examinees made confidence judgements in addition to choosing the correct alternative. The test was scored conventionally with a penalty for guessing and again using confidence-weightings. Over-all achievement for the academic year in psychology was the criterion for validity. There was greater reliability but no improveme…

  • Intelligence and Nonentrenchment

    Frank D Bokhorst•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In an experimental approach to the study of intelligence, information processing components of intelligent task performance were identified using componential analysis. The aim was to replicate Sternberg's (1982) nonentrenched color naming experiment using South African university students as subjects. The same information processing model that Sternberg tested accounted for 90% of variance in response latencies and 66% of variance in errors in t…
