Enhanced UV-B and Elevated CO2 Impacts Sub-Arctic Shrub Berry Abundance, Quality and Seed Germination
Ecological Issues in a Changing World
"Problems of scale have exercised the minds of ecologists for many years, and will continue to do so into the future. This volume deals with this subject and with mathematical approaches to improve our understanding of complex ecological systems. The book also concentrates on monitoring the responses of ecosystems, especially to human impacts upon them. The importance of spatial separation of function at both the landscape and ecosystem level for…
Effects of Frustration Increase and Decrease on Percentage of Short Interresponse Times
The finding by H. L. Armus (1986) that short (less than 1 s) interresponse times (IRTs) occur with greater frequency at higher levels of required lever-pressing effort was investigated. It has been hypothesized that greater percentages of short IRTs at higher effort requirements are an expression of frustration (S. Boyer & R. Carroll, 1980); in the present study, between-groups manipulations of effort and reward combinations were made in an attem…

Underreporting of diabetes on death certificates, King County, Washington
We estimated the reporting of diabetes on death certificates for persons known to have diabetes. Surveillance of 19 hospitals and two paramedic emergency medical services during 12 months in Seattle and King County, Washington, ascertained acute ischemic heart disease events for persons with diabetes and yielded 1235 persons with suspected ischemic heart disease. Mortality was 23.6%, and 41% of death certificates listed diabetes. The reporting of…
