Our study investigates the impact of the British Research Assessment Exercise in 2008 and Research Excellence Framework in 2014 on the diversity and topic structure of UK sociology departments from the perspective of habitus-field theory. Empirically, we train a Latent Dirichlet allocation on 819,673 abstracts stemming from the journals in which British sociologists submitted at least one paper in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 or Research…

  • Whom Should I Talk To?”

    Open Access•Daniel Schubert, Alexander Brand•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Adolescent asylum seekers have been an independent, yet understudied group in the German Youth welfare service since 2016. Due to the separation from their familiar surroundings, young people must establish new connections with their peers in supervised living groups. However, little is known about this special group in the youth welfare system as there are only a few studies covering the situation of adolescent asylum seekers in residential grou…

  • The Symbolic Power of the Research Excellence Framework. Evidence from a case study on the individual and collective adaptation of British Sociologists

    Oliver Wieczorek, Daniel Schubert•PREPRINT•2020

According to the Academic Capitalism-approach, research assessments have a negative impact on research autonomy and research diversity. They urge scholars to tailor their research in order to obtain funding and positive evaluations, which are indispensable for career advancement based on a limited set of quality-criteria. This is supposed to reduce the potential to understand phenomena and to diminish research diversity by nudging scholars to tai…

  • A Five-Year Study on the Interactive Effects of Depression and Physical Illness on Psychiatric Unit Length of Stay

Denise M Sloan, James Yokley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1999

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown that hospital length of stay among medical patients is significantly increased by comorbid mental illness, in particular depression. However, few studies have examined the length of stay effect of comorbid physical and mental illness among psychiatric patients. METHOD: The present study examined the effect of comorbid physical and psychiatric illness on hospital length of stay among 2323 psychiatric inpatien…

  • Differences between the lower social classes

    Daniel S P Schubert, Daniel Schubert et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1980•References: 30

From a four-year sample of 7407 patients, this study sought to determine whether characteristics of patients in Social Class IV are closer to those of Class V, as frequently assumed, or more similar to those of Class III. The implications of social class differences for newer forms of treatment, and newly emerging types of therapists, were also examined. Results suggest that Classes IV and V should be considered separately for both research and c…

  • Social Class and Psychiatric Diagnosis

    Open Access•Daniel Schubert, Sheldon I Miller•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•1978

Social class and the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual II Diagnosis were examined for all patients contracting the Department of Psychiatry over a year at a large county hospital. This sample was primarily lower class -50 per cent Class V and 33 per cent in Class IV. All diagnoses showed average class between IV and V. Organic brain syndrome, both psychiatric and non-psychotic, and mental retardation had lower ave…

  • Teaching Psychiatry To Medical Students On a Consultation Service

    Open Access•Daniel S P Schubert, Daniel Schubert•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•1977

Medical students experience psychiatric consultation as part of their undergraduate psychiatric clerkship experience. This allows further identification of the medical student with the psychiatrist in management of psychiatric problems in patient who are primarily non-psychiatric. Reaction has tended to be favourable from the medical students without a great loss of speed or efficiency in terms of the service committment

  • Increase of Creativity by Prior Response to a Problem

Daniel S P Schubert, Daniel Schubert•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1977

We present a study of connectivity percolation in suspensions of hard spherocylinders by means of Monte Carlo simulation and connectedness percolation theory. We focus attention on polydispersity in the length, the diameter and the connectedness criterion, and invoke bimodal, Gaussian and Weibull distributions for these. The main finding from our simulations is that the percolation threshold shows quasi universal behaviour, i.e., to a good approx…

  • Alertness and Clear Thinking as Characteristics of High Naturally Occurring Autonomic Nervous System Arousal

Daniel S P Schubert, Daniel Schubert•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1977

Studies of the effect of induced mood on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) suggested that naturally occurring mood might also covary with the ANS. Ss were 13 men and women aged 20 to 70. Fatigue, confusion, and depression were measured on the Profile of Mood States, while barometric pressure and the ANS indices of heart rate and body temperature were also recorded. Fatigue and confusion each showed negative relationships to both heart rate and b…

  • Increasing Volunteer Representativeness by Recruiting for Credit or Pay

Mazie Earle Wagner, Daniel S P Schubert et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976

It was hypothesized that recruiting for pay or college credit would considerably increase the similarity of volunteers to their parent populations (and to nonvolunteers) in intellectual ability and personality. For the testing of this hypothesis, volunteers for research-participation were recruited from introductory psychology classes by the instructor, with class credit as a reward: 68 volunteered, 34 did not. Comparisons were made for academic …
