  • Self-Transcendence, Time Perspective, and Prosocial Behavior

    Open Access•Robert C Mathews, Kacey J Kling•ARTICLE•Journal of Voluntary Action…•1988

This study examines the hypothesis that different types of prosocial behaviors are motivated by different ways of fulfilling the need to relate to life beyond one's self. Lifton's (1973, 1976) theory of symbolic immortality is used to generate predictions concerning relations between differences in the ways individuals express this need and differences in the frequency of various types of prosocial behaviors. In the study, 482 adult respondents i…

  • Measuring an Individual's Investment in the Future

    Open Access•Robert C Mathews, Rena D Mister•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1988

Robert Jay Lifton has proposed that humans have a compelling urge to relate to the future beyond their own life span, which he calls the need for symbolic immortality. According to Lifton this need may be expressed in different modes across different individuals and societies. These are the biological, religious, nature, creative, and experiential modes. Based on his research with survivors of the Hiroshima bomb, Lifton suggests that the threat o…

  • Semantic Judgments as Encoding Operations in Recall

Robert C Mathews, Richard C Maples et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1981

Two experiments are reported concerning the effects of semantic encoding operations on the subsequent usefulness of interitem semantic relations in recall. These experiments employ the Mathews paradigm in which Ss first make judgments about the semantic relatedness of words presented in triplets and subsequently have their memory for the words tested. These experiments examine the effects of variations in interitem associative strength (Experimen…

  • Encoding Task and Trace Specificity with Respect to Sensory, Semantic, and Contextual Recall Cues

Robert C Mathews, Maria Vidos et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1981

This study examines the effects of a word judgment task that can be performed at either the semantic or sensory level on the subsequent effectiveness of sensory, semantic, and contextual recall cues. Four experiments are reported, each contrasting the effectiveness of two cue types in university undergradutes (respective ns = 86, 96, 96, 96). The data are analyzed using both traditional and reduction method analyses. In general, the results sugge…
