  • Bipolar spectrum–substance use co-occurrence

Lauren B Alloy, Rachel E Bender et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Bipolar disorders and substance use disorders (SUDs) show high co-occurrence. One explanation for this co-occurrence may be common personality vulnerabilities involved in both. The authors tested whether high behavioral approach system (BAS) sensitivity and impulsiveness are shared personality vulnerabilities in bipolar spectrum disorders and substance use problems and their co-occurrence in a longitudinal study of 132 individuals on the bipolar …

  • Shock-Duration Reduction on the Basis of Interresponse Times

Philip J Bersh, Wayne G Whitehouse et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•2002

Rats were trained on a free-operant procedure in which the duration of randomly occurring shocks depended on the interresponse times of lever presses. Shocks of 1.6-mA intensity were delivered at random intervals with an average density of 10 shocks per min. Each shock that was delivered lasted 0.3 s as long as the interresponse times were within a preset limit. Whenever the interresponse time exceeded the limit, the shocks that were delivered la…

  • Conditioned Inhibition of Cyclophosphamide-Induced Taste Aversion

Joseph V Lambert, Wayne G Whitehouse•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•2002

Rats in an experimental group received trials during which 1 flavor (saccharin) was always followed by cyclophosphamide, an immunosuppressive drug, but another (vanilla) was not. An unconditioned stimulus-only group served as a control. Flavor-preference tests revealed that conditioned excitation and conditioned inhibition occurred in the conditioned group subjects but not in the control group subjects. This demonstration suggests that a conditio…

  • Psychosocial and Immune Effects of Self-Hypnosis Training for Stress Management Throughout the First Semester of Medical School

    Wayne G Whitehouse, David F Dinges et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1996

This study was a 19-week prospective conducted to determine the effectiveness of a self-hypnosis/relaxation intervention to relieve symptoms of psychological distress and moderate immune system reactivity to examination stress in 35 first-year medical students. Twenty-one subjects were randomly selected for training in the use of self-hypnosis as a coping skill and were encouraged to practice regularly and to maintain daily diary records related …
