  • Validity of a Scale Designed to Measure Beliefs in Free Will and Determinism

Open Access•Wayne Viney, Robert McIntyre et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

After hearing a lecture on free will and determinism, 58 junior and senior students volunteered to respond to a scale designed to assess an individual's position on the issue. 11 days following the administration of the scale, students were given an essay examination which asked them to specify and defend their views on free will and determinism. Two judges graded the essays independently and provided assessments of students' positions on free wi…

  • A Nearest-Centroid Technique For Evaluating The Minimum-Variance Clustering Procedure

    Robert M McIntyre, Roger K Blashfield•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1980

It was posited that a good cluster solution has two characteristics: (1) it is stable across multiple random samples; and (2) its clusters accurately correspond to the populations from which the sample of data comes. A technique for evaluating a minimum variance cluster solution (Ward, 1963) was presented which deals with these two characteristics of a solution. In this technique, which follows the cross-validation paradigm, two data sets were dr…

  • The Von Restorff Isolation Effect in Response and Serial Order Learning

I-Ning Huang, Joan Scale et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976•Cited by: 1•References: 1

With an alternate study-test procedure, 254 college students attempted either to free-recall or rearrange in order items of an 11-CVC serial list to a criterion of two consecutive perfect trials. Ss learned the list with or without an isolate which was placed on each of the 11 serial positions. The main findings were as follows: (a) While the reconstruction condition required fewer study trials to criterion than the free-recall condition, the iso…
