  • Taxonomic Abstraction in Psychobiology

Selby H Evans, Michael D Chafetz et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1984

If a body of knowledge in a scientific discipline is to be extended beyond empirical observation and into the realm of laws and principles, one of the fundamental requirements is a taxonomy which supports the systematic integration of observations. Psychobiology benefits from taxonomies provided by biology and chemistry, which include not only object oriented taxonomies such as species or chemical elements, but also process oriented taxonomies, s…

  • Geomagnetic Orienting in the Radial Eight-Arm Maze

    Michael D Chafetz•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1982

The purpose of this selected, theoretical review is to propose an account for radial-maze behavior in the rat. It is suggested that performance in the Olton radial eight-arm maze is similar to navigational performance in other species, and that this radial-maze performance can be acquired as a consequence of the rat's responding to geomagnetic cues. The distinction between cognitive mapping and working memory is not a useful one in this proposal …
