  • The New Normal

    Open Access•Chelsea VanRoo, Jill M Norvilitis et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2023

This study examines differences in college students' responses to COVID-19-related stress over time, beginning in fall 2019 before the pandemic and continuing through fall 2022. A total of 957 students completed measures of motivation, sense of purpose, academic adjustment, grit, and COVID-related stress across 7 semesters. Results indicated that motivation stayed steady throughout much of the pandemic as compared to the fall 2019 semester, with …

  • Predictors of Academic and Social Success and Psychological Well-Being in College Students

    Open Access•Jill M Norvilitis, Howard M Reid•ARTICLE•Education Research International•2012

The present study utilized 217 student participants to examine academic, circumstantial, and personal predictors of four categories of college success. Although study skills were most important in predicting grade point average, other factors, including parental encouragement of intellectual curiosity during childhood, ADHD symptomatology, appreciation of the liberal arts, and varying motives to attend college, were also predictive of success, as…

  • Evidence for an Association between Gender-Role Identity and a Measure of Executive Function

    Open Access•Jill M Norvilitis, Howard M Reid•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2002

Two studies assessed the relation between gender role and executive function. In Study One (N = 234) analyses indicated that among college students executive function, assessed by the Coolidge and Griego scale, is related to masculine gender-role classification, measured by the Bem Sex-role Inventory. This relationship remained significant when biological sex was controlled. Further, factor analysis of the Bem Sex-role Inventory identified six co…

  • Recovery of Susceptibility Following Audiogenic Seizure in Mice

Howard M Reid, J Muench et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1991

The rate at which SJL/J mice recover susceptibility following an initial sound-induced seizure was examined. Fewer than 15% of the subjects seized when retested after a 2-min delay, and only 50% reseized after a 10-min delay. The likelihood of a second seizure was enhanced if the initial seizure exhibited a rapid progression to clonus. During the retest, seizures progressed more slowly than during the initial test, which indicates that recovery w…

  • Encoding in Anticipation of Immediate or Delayed Testing

Susan E Mason, Howard M Reid•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1988

The major purpose of the present study was to determine whether subjects differentially encode in anticipation of immediate or delayed testing. In two experiments, subjects were instructed to study a list of words for a memory test to be given either immediately after stimulus presentation or after a two-day delay. We found that incidental learning of instructions was more easily modified by the learning instructions than was the intentional lear…

  • Sound-Induced Seizure

Howard M Reid, Robert L Collins•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1988

Audiogenic seizures of SJL/J mice sensitized before 3 weeks of age were found to be of two distinct types. Seizures with short latencies to onset were without clear asymmetries of either run or fall direction, whereas seizures occurring after a longer latency were characterized by asymmetries of both of these behaviors
