Mathematical Difficulties in Statistics
79 and 120 students in classes in Psychological Statistics were tested in 1976 and 1991, respectively, with a mathematical readiness test devised by Brown in 1933. A general decline in mathematical ability as measured by the test was found, especially with items involving mathematical reasoning and algebra. Over-all mean scores dropped significantly from 18.8 to 16.6
Spectral Analysis of Interviews Conducted by Rogers and Ellis
Recordings of famous therapeutic interviews were digitized by computer, then subjected to time-series analysis. Spectrograms produced by the same therapist seeing different patients were similar, while spectrograms of different therapists were rather divergent. Further analyses were carried out on the digitized data. The techniques used offer promise as an objective way of quantifying therapeutic interview data
A Re-Examination of Finney's Oral and Anal Characters
Finney's data on oral and anal characters were refactored. The factors obtained in the original analysis were unclear. But in the present study, done with modern methods, three clear-cut and invariant factors—orality, anality, and hostility—appeared. The results were thought to have considerable importance for Freudian theory
An Interactive Program for the Solution of Linear Models
An easy to use program for the interactive solution of linear models is described. The program allows one to enter and to edit simply the complex design matrix, and then separately to solve the linear model. The interactive nature of the program results in a great saving of time for the student. In addition, teleprinter output is timed carefully so that one has the feeling of actually doing the computations
