  • In‐group reassurance in a pain setting produces lower levels of physiological arousal

    Open Access•Michael J Platow, Nicholas J Voudouris et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 42

A large body of research demonstrates a strong social component to people's pain experiences and pain‐related behaviours. We investigate this by examining the impact of social‐influence processes on laboratory‐induced pain responses by manipulating the social‐categorical relationship between the person experiencing pain and another who offers reassurance. We show that physiological arousal associated with laboratory‐induced pain is significantly …

  • Further Observations on the Incremental Stimulus Intensity Effect and Habituation of the Human Electrodermal Response

    J G O'Gorman, John O’Gorman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1978

Two studies are reported which examined the relative effectiveness of an incremental series of stimulus intensities for reducing electrodermal responsiveness to a test stimulus. In the first study, employing five pairs of male undergraduates matched on electrodermal responsiveness, habituation to a 100 db (re 20muN/m2) noise burst was compared following two training procedures. In one, stimulation began at 64 db and increased by 4 db up to 96 db …
