Feelings from a dialogical perspective: Ontology and clinical applications
Consideration is given to our cognitive, volitional, and emotive functions as they are experienced in the I‐It and I‐Thou realms of our existence, focusing on our emotive function. Feelings in the I‐It realm are limited to the physical and psychical parts of ourselves. They are defensive and motivate our survival in the world. In the I‐Thou realm, they permeate our whole being, including that part of ourselves that is beyond phenomenological mani…
The unconscious functions of the I—it and I—thou realms
Martin Buber (1958b) presented two ways of interacting with the world, I—It and I—Thou. The distinctions of these ways of engaging the world with their respective unconscious functions are delineated in an attempt to fulfill the promise made in the Healing Between (1993) to clarify the dialogical perspective of our unconscious functions. It is the dialogical psychotherapist's contention that the source of the client's existential healing is not f…
Independent Manipulation of Meaning and M
THE INDEPENDENCE OF MEANING AND WORD ASSOCIATION PROCESSES WAS DEMONSTRATED THROUGH THE SEPARATE MANIPULATION OF THE TWO PROCESSES. Further, the syllables paired with 4 pleasant word associates scored significantly more pleasant ratings than the syllables paired with only 2 …

Attitude Development and Ratio of Reinforcement
The statement that attitudes are learned almost always as a result of adoption of ready-made attitudes of parents, teachers, or playmates (1, p. 811) rather than as a result of personal experiences has been well documented (e.g., 4, 11). The process through which the adoption of ready-made attitudes occurs has yet to be fully specified, however. It is insufficient to say that attitudes are learned, in part, through communication from one individu…
