Studying the Social Aspects of Leisure
A Multiple-Method Field Investigation Model (MMFI) is proposed in order to provide a strategy for balancing social psychological inquiry of leisure. The Model extends former multimethod recommendations, being organized on two dimensions. These are (a) proximity or closeness to the interactive leisure context or incident (i.e., directly interacting, observing interaction, or using out-of-context records), and (b) time relative to the leisure conte…
Achieving intersubjectivity
Phenomenological study of leisure is an important source for information on the meaning of leisure in everyday life. While some easing of attitudes has occurred, regarding the legitimacy of subject-centred research, and articles and papers appear to substantiate the utility of phenomenological approaches to study leisure, the argument is made that leisure researchers lag behind colleagues in other social sciences in conveying intersubjectivity in…
A leisure of one's own
Socially organized role‐taking
Symbolic interaction theory often guides leisure research, and social interaction is touted as constitutive of the recreative experience. Absent from our literature is information about how social roles, which are the social mechanism for organizing interaction, develop in play. To build grounded theory about personal experience in freely chosen pursuits, a naturalistic investigation of personal goods auctions was conducted using participant obse…
The Play-World Setting of the Auction
Little is known about adult leisure, specifically adult play, in unstructured settings. An empirical study investigated the commercial, personal-goods, auction sale as an adult play-world setting. Huizinga's conception of play was employed in an application of symbolic interaction theory, using participant observation methodology. Findings suggest that auctions are a play-world setting for adults. They are a performance in which boundaries are de…
Participant Observation in the Recreation Setting
Participant observation of the social-psychological context for sport-group membership is reported as a non-intrusive way to examine an hypothesis that group members' behaviors toward each other would be incongruent with their espoused purposes of positive social relations. The research plan defined membership parameters, characteristic phenomena, and models of social systems, balancing subjective and objective perspectives. Data, including parti…
