  • Are We Ready for “Radical Leisure”

    B Dana Kivel•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 18

For that past 40 years, hundreds of articles have been published in the major journals that examine leisure, recreation, and parks in North America, for example, the Journal of Leisure Research, Leisure Sciences, and Journal of Recreation and Park Administration. Yet, we are no closer to influencing policy, shifting public opinion, or persuading ourselves and each other that the idea of leisure is something that we should value, embrace, and figh…

  • Momentarily Understanding the Contemporary Moment

    B Dana Kivel•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2018•References: 9

A koan is a paradoxical riddle used to help practitioners of Zen Buddhism in their quest for non attachment. The idea of the koan can also be helpful as we attempt to make sense of the current social, historical and political moment. Do the events of 2018 reflect reality or reflect a temporal moment in reality? This essay ponders the meaning of attachment, letting go and taking action vis-à-vis the politics of leisure

  • Critical Race Theory and Social Justice Perspectives on Whiteness, Difference(s) and (Anti)Racism

    Susan Arai, B Dana Kivel•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2009•Cited by: 43•References: 6

This special issue of the Journal of Leisure Research focuses on critical race theory and social justice perspectives on whiteness, difference(s) and (anti)racism in leisure studies. Drawing on Floyd's (2007) previous work articulating waves of race research in leisure studies, we argue this special issue helps to advance a fourth wave. As part of this fourth wave, papers in this issue address the limitations of essentializing race, advance argum…

  • Consuming Media, Making Men

B Dana Kivel, Charles Wm Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2009•Cited by: 20•References: 2

Parents, educators, researchers and policymakers have sought to identify the root causes of male youth violence by looking at media's influence on young people. Grounded in social constructionism, this study uses collective memory work to explore that relationship. The findings are presented in terms of two levels of analysis: individual/micro messages and societal/macro messages and revealed that through media consumption, men actively construct…

  • Rocky Mountain National Park

BETH ERICKSON, Charles Wm Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2009•Cited by: 33•References: 2

This investigation examined experiences of the African-American population living in the Denver area about their visitation to Rocky Mountain National Park. Using qualitative semi-structured interviews with 36 participants, and archival techniques, the authors identify the historical and cultural factors that resulted in low use of the park by African-Americans. Consequently, the authors suggest the use of Bourdieu's "cultural capital" and "habit…

  • (Re)Theorizing Leisure, Experience and Race

B Dana Kivel, Charles Wm Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2009•Cited by: 39•References: 12

Leisure scholars have attempted to examine experience through a social-psychological lens that locates the individual and her/his interpretation of leisure experiences at the center of discussions about leisure, leisure experience and identity. However, this primarily social-psychological perspective lacks an accompanying discussion about the ideologies and discourses that structure those experiences. The purpose of this paper is to examine how "…

  • Examining Racism, Power, and White Hegemony in Stodolska's Conditioned Attitude Model of Individual Discriminatory Behavior

    B Dana Kivel, BETH D KIVEL•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Monica Stodolska has developed a “conditioned attitude model of individual discriminatory behavior” in an attempt to understand and predict how people acquire prejudicial attitudes and how such att

  • Context and Dialogue in Research on Women and Leisure

Karla A Henderson, Sonja Hodges et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2002•Cited by: 52•References: 14

Research about women and leisure in the past twenty years has expanded as researchers from around the world have examined leisure and its meanings from different perspectives. In the past five years, researchers have used a variety of theoretical perspectives to examine women's leisure. The suggestion by Henderson (1996) that "one size doesn't fit all" has been applied in new studies related to girls and women in various life situations. The purp…
