Risk due to inactivity in physically capable older adults
OBJECTIVES. This study examined the association between recreational physical activity among physically capable older adults and functional status, incidence of selected chronic conditions, and mortality over 3 and 6 years. METHODS. Data are from three sites of the Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly. RESULTS. A high level of recreational physical activity reduced the likelihood of mortality over both 3 and 6 years. M…
The Compression of Comorbidity
Epidemiologic evidence on the compression of morbidity issue suggests that despite the recent increase in longevity of older Americans, the age-specific prevalence rates for most chronic illnesses have not concomitantly declined. However, current morbidity survey methods may not be fully able to characterize the scope of illness, function, physiologic status, and homeostatic capacity of a population to the extent necessary to determine whether mo…
Self-Evaluated Health and Mortality Among the Elderly in New Haven, Connecticut, and Iowa and Washington Counties, Iowa, 1982–1986
The ability of global self-evaluations of health to predict survival in follow-up studies is tested in two samples of elderly, noninstitutionalized adults. Data from the Yale Health and Aging Project, New Haven, Connecticut (n = 2,812), and the 65+ Rural Health Study, Iowa and Washington counties, Iowa (n = 3,673), were used to investigate the association between 1982 self-evaluated global health status (excellent, good, fair, poor) and survivors…
Edentulism and oral health problems among elderly rural Iowans
A household health interview survey of 3,673 noninstitutionalized people aged 65 and over in two rural Iowa counties included questions about loss of teeth, use of dentures, and presence of oral health problems. Edentulism rates were 10-15 per cent lower than those found a decade earlier in national health surveys. A log-linear analysis found that the best demographic predictors of edentulism were education, age, and marital status. Spouses tende…
Factors Associated with the Aging Leisure Repertoire
This study describes factors related to the leisure repertoires of a large population of rural elderly. Age, self-perceived health, leisure attitude, life satisfaction and sex were the most influential factors with regard to the size of subjects' leisure repertoires. Though associations between education, exercise attitude and marital status and leisure repertoire were statistically significant, none accounted for even one percent of the variabil…
