Cattle Ranchers and Agritourism in Oregon, USA
Cattle ranches are cultural icons in many countries. Still, high costs to maintain ranches may force some ranchers to sell their operation. One income alternative is to diversify into agritourism. Empirical research on ranch agritourism is scarce. This study provides an overview of, and assesses the motivations for, and challenges to diversifying into agritourism from the ranchers' perspective. A survey of 400 Oregon ranchers in 2003 found that 2…
Toward an Approach for Measuring Indicators of Facility Carrying Capacity in Outdoor Recreation Areas
This article uses data from 1,399 individuals at six sites in Hawai`i to examine congruence among their encounters, norms, and satisfaction with six types of facilities (e.g., trash cans, bathrooms, signs) and the actual number of these facilities. The majority of users recalled encountering fewer of each facility than the number they believed should be at each site (i.e., their norm) and these users were least satisfied with these facilities. Wh…
Interpersonal and Social Values Conflict Among Coastal Recreation Activity Groups in Hawaii
We report on user conflicts at six Hawaiian beaches and compare the extent to which evaluations of coastal recreation conflicts differ among groups. This information can be used to help understand current recreation users at coastal sites in Hawaii. Exploratory factor analyses supported a multidimensional interpersonal conflict factor based on four activity subgroups and a multidimensional social values conflict factor based on three activity sub…
Rangeland Privatization and the Maasai Experience
Using qualitative research methods we examined how group ranch privatization and settlement of individual Maasai households across the landscape have affected traditional livestock herding and social capital mechanisms of Maasai livestock herders. This process has altered decision-making processes, social networks, and cooperation of Maasai herders and limited access to water and pasture. It has disturbed community cohesion and created conflicts …
Small-Scale Urban Nature Parks
Small-scale urban natural parks have the potential to contribute to the health and well-being of urban communities. Although recreation researchers have seldom focused on such areas, recreation research theory can be successfully applied to urban natural parks, especially if augmented by the application of social capital and social networks theory. Social capital and networks theories will aid recreation researchers and policy makers in understan…
Quality hunting experiences
Research into quality hunting experiences has, with few exceptions, employed quantitative assessment techniques. This study examines Idaho elk hunters’ own narrations, using a qualitative analysis procedure novel in the hunting literature, to describe the key characteristics of Idaho hunters’ quality rifle elk hunting experiences. Discernible patterns that emerged from the analysis resulted in 32 quality categories, supporting the contention that…
