Toward An Expanding Methodological Base in Leisure Studies
The nature and content of the leisure studies literature in the next century will be influenced by the methods that researchers employ. Therefore the purpose of this study is to explore the current attitudes, knowledge and practices concerning qualitative research of a group of active North American leisure researchers (n = 115) in order to understand the changes that may lie ahead. Findings suggest that attitudes toward qualitative data are surp…
Effects of Boredom on Self-Reported Health
Two analyses were conducted to determine whether persons scoring in the upper and lower quartiles on the Leisure Boredom Scale would differ in their self-reports of mental and physical health. It was hypothesized that higher boredom scores would result in more negative self-reports of health. Data from two samples of college undergraduates were reported (total n =119). Multivariate F tests were significant, supporting the hypothesis. After correc…
Judging the relevance of deductive inquiry
This article argues that the relevance of deductive research is best judged according to how well it serves theory. This unavoidable basic tenet is examined for its implications to the practice of traditional social science: (a) that theory building would be a valued activity; (b) that scholars would focus on elaborating and critiquing a small number of influential theories; (c) that research papers would be theory based and hypothesis driven; an…
Development, Reliability and Validity of a Scale to Measure Intrinsic Motivation in Leisure
The purpose of the present study is to describe the development of a theory-based instrument to measure individual differences in the disposition toward intrinsic motivation in leisure behavior, and to report data from nine studies examining the reliability and validity of the instrument (total n = 1866). Based on the conceptual work of Deci and Ryan (1985a), Kobasa (1979), and their associates, the Intrinsic Leisure Motivation Disposition is def…
The Relationship of Leisure Activities and Perceived Health of College Students
This exploratory study examines the relationship of general health and general leisure participation variables, as well as overall life satisfaction, among 525 college undergraduates. Additionally, the study looks at the relationship between specific types of leisure participation and their relationship with health variables, including social, physical, and emotional health. The sample was comprised of college undergraduates from three universiti…
Use of recreation majors as research subjects
A study was conducted to examine whether college undergraduates majoring in recreation would be unbiased subjects for leisure research studies. It was hypothesized that recreation majors (n = 762) would be significantly more positive than nonrecreation majors (n = 363) in their self‐reports of leisure‐related attitudes and behavior. Five dependent variables (leisure boredom, intrinsic leisure motivation, leisure ethic, leisure satisfaction, and l…
Relation between intrinsic motivation and boredom in leisure time
The present investigation replicated and extended an earlier finding of the negative relation between intrinsic motivation in leisure behavior and boredom in leisure time (Iso‐Ahola & Weissinger, 1987). Secondary analysis of data from 474 college undergraduates was used to construct a regression model of boredom. Results indicate that the self‐determination component of intrinsic leisure motivation explained the greatest portion of boredom varian…
Development of a Leisure Experience Battery for Adolescents
This study reports the development of a battery of scales measuring selected dimensions of leisure experience of adolescents. Four leisure dimensions were included in the battery: boredom, awareness, anxiety, and challenge. The reliability and validity of these scales were established with a sample of 1,407 adolescents. The goal of the analysis was to produce parsimonious yet internally consistent measures of selected dimensions of the adolescent…
Of Revolutions and Resistance
In a response to the criticisms presented in the preceeding group of papers, Kuhn's (1970) metaphor of intellectual revolutions is utilized to provide a framework for the dialogue between social scientists and the scholars who challenge social science. It is suggested that the revolution in leisure studies has two components: criticism of the philosophical and methodological limitations of social science, and criticism of the dominance of social …
Perceptions of Boredom in Leisure
This paper describes a theoretically and empirically based conceptualization of the leisure boredom construct. In addition, it reports the secondary analysis of data from three studies (N = 679) for the purpose of assessing the reliability and validity of the Leisure Boredom Scale. The results provided strong Support for the internal consistency and construct validity of the instrument, which is designed to measure individual differences in perce…
A Methodological Review of Research in Journal of Leisure Research From 1978 to 1982
A review was undertaken to examine the methodological adequacy of research articles that applied quantitative techniques and were published in Journal of Leisure Research from 1978 to 1982. The methodological quality of reported research has undergone some change since 1978 — a trend toward improvement was evidenced on about one-half of the criteria used for the review. Nevertheless, severe shortcomings still exist. Reported research would benefi…
Intrinsic Leisure Motivation, Personality and Physical Health
This article presents theoretical and empirical evidence favoring a revised perspective of intrinsic leisure behavior. This view suggests that intrinsically motivated behavior is a result not just of task characteristics, but rather is a result of the interaction of situational and personality factors. Further, the paper presents evidence from recent investigations linking an intrinsic motivation personality disposition to mental health, and more…
