Scientists’ Perceptions of Community and Citizen Science in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic
Arctic research is shifting from a culture of scientist-driven inquiry and extractive relationships with Indigenous communities to a culture more conscious of local priorities and reciprocal research relationships. Today, Arctic research has dual goals of examining circumpolar issues through large-scale studies and collaborating with local individuals and communities through approaches such as community and citizen science (CCS). Scientists’ use …
Motivations of Fur Trappers in Interior Alaska
Understanding how and why trapping effort varies among fur trappers is necessary to accurately interpret trends in fur harvest for wildlife management. We mailed questionnaires to 1,760 fur trappers in interior Alaska to characterize motivations for trapping and primary factors affecting trapping effort. A cluster analysis revealed four groups with distinct motivations for trapping: wildlife management (17% of trappers), recreation (39%), subsist…
Basic Beliefs About Wildlife and Migration
This study compared mean scores on four items from the appropriate use basic belief dimension of the domination wildlife value orientation scale between life-long Alaska residents and migrants to Alaska from the western United States. Basic beliefs were compared among the migrant-sourcing states. Data were collected through a mail survey; 2,264 questionnaires were completed (27% response rate) and 1,673 responses were included in this analysis. W…
Measuring Motivations as a Method of Mitigating Social Values Conflict
Alaska's Western Arctic Caribou Herd is an important subsistence resource for communities along its migration path and provides opportunities for sport hunting. Members of local communities have expressed conflict with sport hunters' actions including dispersing caribou away from their communities, failing to salvage meat, and trophy hunting. We measured sources of conflict among village residents and sport hunters' motivations for hunting. A clu…
Generalizability of a Cluster Solution Over Time
This study investigated the generalizability across time of a cluster analysis that identified five groups with differing motivations for visiting a National Historic Landmark. Replication of the initial study after a one-year time period suggested the same visitor types (i.e., clusters) were present in both study years; however, the relative size of the clusters varied by up to ten percent. A group defined by motivations scores in the middle of …
Assessing Public Acceptance of Wildlife Management Trade-Offs
Balancing wildlife management trade-offs is likely to result in differential impacts and varying levels of support among stakeholders. Science should guide discourse regarding these trade-offs, and science can, in turn, quantify the discourse to inform management. This study developed a unique visual-based instrument to explain complex trade-offs to the public and quantify preferences for elk and vegetation management in Rocky Mountain National P…
Testing the importance of fish stocking as a determinant of the demand for fishing licenses and fishing effort in colorado
A time‐series regression analysis of data from 1975 to 1995 showed no statistically significant relationship between number of catchable or subcatchable coldwater fish stocked and number of resident and nonresident season licenses sold. Stocking of warmwater subcatchables was a significant determinant of resident season license sales, although a 100% change in stocking results in only a 7% to 9% increase in license sales. Stocking of warmwater ca…

The Economic Benefits of Mountain Biking at One of Its Meccas
This paper estimates the value of a relatively new form of recreation: mountain biking. Its popularity has resulted in many documented conflicts, and its value must be estimated so an informed decision regarding trail allocation can be made. A travel cost model (TCM) is used to estimate the economic benefits, measured by consumer surplus, to the users of mountain bike trails near Moab, Utah. The TCM estimated accounts for several issues including…
