Contribution of Leisure to the Life Satisfaction of Older Adults in Australia and the United States
The contribution of leisure to overall satisfaction with life was investigated among older adults from Australia and the United States. Leisure variables included leisure activity participation, leisure satisfaction, and leisure constraints. Life satisfaction was evaluated as a global outcome using Life Satisfaction Index-Z. Cross-sectional, representative samples based on age (50–90 years), gender, and socio-demographic variables were developed …
Leisure Constraints
This research replicates and extends previous work on leisure-constraints construct development by applying constraints data from a sample of adults with mental retardation. Factor analysis extends definitions for three constraint categories (intrapersonal, interpersonal, structural), confirming the nonhomogeneous nature of leisure constraints. Interpersonal constraints, for example, may have multiple meanings depending upon where one is situated…
Correlates of self‐reported leisure among adults with mental retardation
Activity theorists propose that leisure activity is important to perceived well‐being in adulthood and that many factors may influence activity patterns. Current assumptions supported by researchers in the field of disabilities are that the expression of personal preferences and interests increases perceptions of self‐worth and independence in adults with mental retardation. Empirical evidence that systematically describes the leisure activity pa…
