Investigating nominative object constructions in Korean
Cross-linguistically, the existence of ‘double case’ configurations (e.g., nom -subject and nom -object) presents an empirical challenge to theories of case where anti-identity, or distinctness between two NPs, plays a key role (e.g., Yip, Maling & Jackendoff 1987). This study investigates the factors that influence the distribution of nominative object constructions in Korean. In a novel acceptability judgment experiment, we find that sentences …
Context-Aware Anomaly Detection of Pedestrian Trajectories in Urban Back Streets Using a Variational Autoencoder
Detecting anomalous pedestrian behaviors is critical for enhancing safety in dense urban environments, particularly in complex back streets where movement patterns are irregular and context-dependent. While extensive research has been conducted on trajectory-based anomaly detection for vehicles, ships, and aircraft, few studies have focused on pedestrians, whose behaviors are strongly influenced by surrounding spatial and environmental conditions…
Narrating Time Through the Body
This study analyzed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by integrating corporeal narratology with Greimas’s semiotic square, examining how temporality and identity are constructed and deconstructed through the body. Benjamin’s body serves as a semiotic field where oppositions like “youth/old age” and “life/death” are generated, clash, and collapse. The semiotic square revealed how these binary structures become unsustainable and the internal disi…
What prosody does when morphosyntax is absent
This study investigates the role of prosodic information in linguistic interpretation in the absence of an explicit linguistic marker to resolve ambiguity. We particularly focus on the impact of prosody on comprehension of restrictive relative clauses (RRC) and non-restrictive relative clauses (NRC) in Korean, a language that lacks morphosyntactic or orthographic markers that distinguish between RRC and NRC. We hypothesize that narrow focus proso…
Dependency formation interacts with case
The subject-object asymmetry in relative clauses, where structures containing subject dependencies are typically easier to process than those with object dependencies, has been previously attributed to both grammatical function (subject > object) as well as morphological case (e.g., nom > acc). We investigate processing of Double Nominative Constructions (“DNCs”) in Korean, where the object exceptionally has nominative case like the subject (i.e.…
