Pearõhu asukoht ja seda mõjutavad tegurid eesti keele võõrsõnades
Uurimuses vaadeldakse eesti keele vÃμÃμrsÃμnu, mille järgsilbis on iii välde ja/vÃμi pikk vokaal. Sellistes vÃμÃμrsÃμnades vÃμib pearÃμhk olla iii väldet ja/ vÃμi pikka vokaali sisaldaval järgsilbil vÃμi esisilbil. Eesti leksikograafilises traditsioonis ei ole tavaks pearÃμhu asukohta konkreetsetes seda tÃ1⁄4Ã1⁄4pi sÃμnades märkida. KeeleÃμppijate huvides oleks pearÃμhu asukoha märkimine sellistes sÃμnades siiski vajalik. SeetÃμttu uurisime, mill…
Acoustic correlates of primary word stress in Estonian
This study investigates the acoustic correlates of primary word stress in Estonian. The results contribute to several open questions concerning the acoustic correlates of word stress: Does fixed word stress have acoustic correlates? Can duration be the primary acoustic correlate of word stress in a language with contrastive segment length? Is F0 an exclusive correlate of phrase stress or does it also correlate with word stress? The study finds th…
Prosodic phrasing of the parenthetical palun ‘please’ in Estonian requests
This study investigates the prosody of the Estonian parenthetical palun ‘please’ in imperative requests. The occurrence of prosodic phrase boundary cues such as pauses, pre-boundary lengthening, and creaky voice as well as pitch characteristics and accentuation are analysed. The analysis is based on 753 utterances, where palun appears in three different positions: initial, medial or final. The requests were elicited using context descriptions fro…
Eesti keele otseste eriküsilausete sõnajärje aspekte
Estonian is a verb-second (V2) language: in certain types of sentences, the finite verb tends to be the second constituent. The V2 feature of Estonian is most likely to have developed under Germanic influence. However, there are differences between Germanic and Estonian V2 order. The word order of Estonian main-clause wh-interrogatives is one of the major exceptions to the V2 order. Main-clause wh-interrogatives are always V2 in Germanic but pred…
The prosody of surprise questions in Estonian
This paper examines the role of prosody in a little-studied type of non-canonical questions: syntactically and lexically canonical interrogative sentences that have been uttered by the speaker in order to express surprise. The study compares Estonian surprise questions with string-identical information-seeking questions elicited by means of context descriptions. The materials comprise 1,008 utterances by 21 speakers. It is concluded that the pros…
Verb placement and accentuation
The paper contributes to the understanding of the variation in finite verb placement in Estonian, a verb-second language, by establishing two descriptive facts. First, it identifies a previously undescribed finite verb position in Estonian declarative main clauses, which will be referred to as ‘clause-medial’. The clause-medial position is located between clause-medial sentence adverbials on the one hand, and VP adverbials and the complements of …

Implications of a Construction for the Theory of Grammaticalization
The paper proceeds from a comparison of a grammaticalization and a constructional account of a class of formulaic adverbial expressions from Estonian. The comparison is argued to reveal that the grammaticalization analysis is informed by a particular synchronic model of grammar, and thus that the study of grammaticalization more generally is dependent on the assumed conception of grammar. The paper then goes on to discuss some implications of ba…
Demonstrative Doubling in Spoken Estonian
In spoken Estonian virtually every argument and adjunct phrase in a sentence may in principle be preceded by the corresponding demonstrative. These demonstrativelexical element pairs have been assigned different syntactic analyses or have not been analysed at all. In the present article it will be argued that all these combinations are instances of the same syntactic construction, which can be interpreted as a doubling construction and which can …
