A model for diffusion of mulucomponent information
The epidemic model of diffusion of news (or disease) is generalized to describe the diffusion of a multi‐component information. The multivaluedness of information in our model arises due to the large number (k) of constituent components or items of the information in question. When the different components of information are assumed to bear no hierarchy, the master equation of the model contains an intractably large number of variables (2 k ). Th…
Interactive markovian models of ‘progressive’ trends
Non‐linear Markovian models are investigated for a developing society stratified in terms of literacy or some other sociocultural attribute and characterized by two opposing features: a) progressive trends which forbid upper to lower state intergeneration transitions, and b) fertility differential in favour of lower states. The progressive trends in the models arise due to ‘attraction’ of the higher states. Two different limits are considered: on…
A mathematical model of progressive literacy
We consider the two principal determinants of the dynamics of literacy in a developing country such as India: (a) a tendency of each family to improve or retain (but never retrogress) its literacy state with each successive generation, and (b) a differential in fertility, with number of off‐springs rising with decreasing literacy. The interplay of these contradictory trends is investigated in a mathematical model adapted and generalized from earl…
