  • Rethinking the Interpretation of Item Discrimination and Factor Loadings

    Open Access•Pascal Jordan, Martin Spieß•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2019

Factor loadings and item discrimination parameters play a key role in scale construction. A multitude of heuristics regarding their interpretation are hardwired into practice-for example, neglecting low loadings and assigning items to exactly one scale. We challenge the common sense interpretation of these parameters by providing counterexamples and general results which altogether cast doubt on our understanding of these parameters. In particula…

  • The effect of authenticity in music on the subjective theories and aesthetical evaluation of listeners

Open Access•Liming Wu, Wu LiMing et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2017

This study evaluates the influence of cultural and personal aspects of authenticity on the cognitive elaboration of music. Cognitive elaboration of music is comprised of a recipient’s subjective theories about and aesthetical evaluation of (a piece of) music. Subjective theories are based on information from different sources including oneself and the media. They can, for example, be used to explain the liking and perceived aesthetics of a piece …

  • A Selection Model for Panel Data

    Open Access•Martin Spies, Martin Spieß et al.•ARTICLE•Political Analysis•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 44

Although sample selection bias is a frequent problem of applied research, there has been no generalization of sample selection models with binary dependent variables of interest to data with temporal error correlations. We suggest a generalized estimating equation approach to panel data selection models, considering binary responses in both equations. We demonstrate the utility of this model by a simulation study and by analyzing highly unbalance…

  • Alternative Measures of the Explanatory Power of General Multivariate Regression Models

Martin Spieß, Gerhard Tutz•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 2

In this paper R 2-type measures of the explanatory power of multivariate linear and categorical probit models proposed in the literature are reviewed and their deficiencies discussed. It is argued that a measure of the explanatory power should take into account the components which are explicitly modelled when a regression model is estimated while it should be indifferent to components not explicitly modelled. Based on this view three different m…
