The role of the behavioral immune system in the expression of short and long-term orientation in young Chilean men during the Covid-19 pandemic
We find changes are maintained at the level of sociosexual desire and sexual behavior but mainly in those individuals with a greater perception of the risk of contagion. The hypotheses derived from the behavioral immune system regarding the decrease in sociosexuality in a context of risk of contagion by pathogens, as was the case in the initial period of COVID-19, are corroborated only in terms of desire and behavior, which suggests a certain sta…
An Agent-Based Model of Issue Alignment and Polarization Based on the Menu-Independent and Menu-Dependent Influences Model
We present an opinion dynamics agent-based model (ABM) of issue alignment and bipolarization in two ideological dimensions: society and economy. The ABM formalizes and extends the menu-independent and -dependent influences (MIDI) model, a psychological theory of political attitude formation. The MIDI model posits that citizens naturally adopt social and economic attitudes that are congruent with a latent trait: their need for security and certainty…
The lexical divide
Internal factors-such as psychological traits or individual attitudes-relate to and explain political cleavages. Yet, little is known about how locus of control, agency, and modal attitudes impact political ideology. Utilizing textual analysis within the context of the Chilean 2015 constituent process, we go beyond traditional survey methods to explore community clusters in “Values” and “Rights” networks built upon the deliberation of 106,000 peo…
Game theory in the classroom
Cooperation and bullying have a subtle yet important interaction that influences the social dynamics in elementary school classrooms. We investigate this interplay in a large sample of 1112 students across 47 public primary classrooms in Chile. Using a video game interface to create a dyadic, non-anonymous social dilemma, we map the cooperative social network within each classroom. In addition, we collect peer nomination data and use the Illinois…
Androgen receptor gene and sociosexuality. Does fighting ability moderate the effect of genetics in reproductive strategies
Bullying and subjective well-being
The Ecosystems of Simple and Complex Societies
We present a spatial agent-based model of the emergence and proliferation of premodern complex societies in an isolated region initially inhabited by simple societies. At the intrasocietal level, the model integrates scalar stress, social fission, sociocultural evolution, societal collapse, and Malthusian-Ricardian demographic dynamics. At the geographical level, the model includes warfare for territory and captives, territorial division due to s…
The universal decay of collective memory and attention
The Economics of Social Stratification in Premodern Societies
We present a microeconomic model of social stratification, which includes an endogenous fertility component. In the model, egalitarian and stratified societies coexist. The latter are divided into 2 hereditary classes: a warrior elite and a productive class. The model entails that the extra cost warriors must incur to train and equip their children for war determines the relative sizes of both classes and the degree of economic inequality. Higher…
Exploring External Validity of Common Pool Resource Experiments

Navigating transformations in governance of Chilean marine coastal resources
Marine ecosystems are in decline. New transformational changes in governance are urgently required to cope with overfishing, pollution, global changes, and other drivers of degradation. Here we explore social, political, and ecological aspects of a transformation in governance of Chile's coastal marine resources, from 1980 to today. Critical elements in the initial preparatory phase of the transformation were ( i ) recognition of the depletion of…
