Assets and health across the lifecourse
Migration is a defining feature of the 21 st century. With more than 304 million people having left their country of birth and the number growing daily, understanding the needs of migrant populations will be a primary global concern in coming decades. We propose a framework for understanding the health needs of migrant populations across life stages that builds on asset-building and lifecourse perspectives. We highlight examples from the literatu…
Methodological differences in measuring post-traumatic stress disorder
The Covid-19 pandemic spurred an unprecedented rise in mental health research globally, with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) emerging as a prominent concern. However, estimates of PTSD prevalence during the pandemic varied widely, raising questions about methodological consistency in how PTSD was measured and conceptualized during the pandemic. We systematically reviewed the global literature assessing PTSD prevalence during the Covid-19 pan…
Embracing complexity and innovation to tackle the social determinants of health
box Recognition of the social determinants of health has moved into the mainstream, yet health inequities continue to persist or widen in many countries
Experience of Personal Loss Due to Drug Overdose Among US Adults
This cross-sectional study found that 32% of US adults reported knowing someone who died of a drug overdose and that personal overdose loss was associated with greater odds of endorsing addiction as an important policy issue. The findings suggest that mobilization of this group may be an avenue to facilitate greater policy change
Reimagining global health scholarship to tackle health inequities

Disruptions to the social determinants of health and mental health indicators during the pandemic in eight countries
The social determinants of health (SDoH) shape both the risk of mental disorders and access to treatment. There is ample evidence detailing the decline in mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, there is a gap in our understanding of the association between disruptions to SDoH and adverse psychological indicators in different contexts. Data were collected through a multi-country, random, anonymous, opt-in, cross-sectional online surv…
Use of machine learning methods to understand discussions of female genital mutilation/cutting on social media
Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) describes several procedures that involve injury to the vulva or vagina for nontherapeutic reasons. Though at least 200 million women and girls living in 30 countries have undergone FGM/C, there is a paucity of studies focused on public perception of FGM/C. We used machine learning methods to characterize discussion of FGM/C on Twitter in English from 2015 to 2020. Twitter has emerged in recent years as a…
Global Health Equity Requires Global Equity
Many global health challenges are characterized by the inequitable patterning of their health and economic consequences, which are etched along the lines of pre-existing inequalities in resources, power, and opportunity. These links require us to reconsider how we define global health equity, and what we consider as most consequential in its pursuit. In this article, we discuss the extent to which improving underlying global equity is an essentia…

What matters for health? Public views from eight countries
Introduction Despite growing scholarship on the social determinants of health (SDoH), wider action remains in its early stages. Broad public understanding of SDoH can help catalyse such action. This paper aimed to document public perception of what matters for health from countries with broad geographic, cultural, linguistic, population composition, language and income level variation. Methods We conducted an online survey in Brazil, China, Germa…
Marital rape and its impact on the mental health of women in India

Financial hardship and health risk behavior during Covid-19 in a large US national sample of women
COVID-19 has caused over 300,000 US deaths thus far, but its long-term health consequences are not clear. Policies to contain the pandemic have led to widespread economic problems, which likely increase stress and resulting health risk behaviors, particularly among women, who have been hardest hit both by job loss and caregiving responsibilities. Further, women with pre-existing disadvantage (e.g., those without health insurance) may be most at r…
Media Exposure and the Risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following a Mass traumatic Event
Introduction: Following mass traumatic events, greater exposure to traditional media like television (TV) about the event is associated with higher burden of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, we know little about how social media exposure, combined with other media sources, shapes the population burden of PTSD following mass traumatic events. Materials and Methods: We built a microsimulation of 1,18,000 agents that was demographical…

Data Sources for Understanding the Social Determinants of Health
The expansion in the scope, scale, and sources of data on the wider social determinants of health (SDH) in the last decades could bridge gaps in information available for decision-making. However, challenges remain in making data widely available, accessible, and useful towards improving population health. While traditional, government-supported data sources and comparable data are most often used to characterize social determinants, there are st…

Low assets and financial stressors associated with higher depression during Covid-19 in a nationally representative sample of US adults
BACKGROUND: COVID-19 and related containment policies have caused or heightened financial stressors for many in the USA. We assessed the relation between assets, financial stressors and probable depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Between 31 March 2020 and 13 April 2020, we surveyed a probability-based, nationally representative sample of US adults ages 18 and older using the COVID-19 and Life stressors Impact on Mental Health and W…

Prevalence of Depression Symptoms in US Adults Before and During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Importance: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the policies to contain it have been a near ubiquitous exposure in the US with unknown effects on depression symptoms. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of and risk factors associated with depression symptoms among US adults during vs before the COVID-19 pandemic. Design, Setting, and Participants: This nationally representative survey study used 2 population-based surveys of US…
What is considered as global health scholarship? A meta-knowledge analysis of global health journals and definitions
Despite the rapid growth of the global health field over the past few decades, consensus on what qualifies as global health scholarship or practice remains elusive. We conducted a meta-knowledge analysis of the titles and abstracts of articles published in 25 journals labelled as global health journals between 2001 and 2019. We identified the major topics in these journals by creating clusters based on terms co-occurrence over time. We also condu…
