Beatrice Pestarino, Kypriōn Politeia, The Political and Administrative Systems of the Classical Cypriot City‐Kingdoms
A Cypriot kingdom of Phoenician language and culture during the classical period, Kition joined the Lagid possessions in the 3rd century BC, together with the whole island of Cyprus. Political changes were accompanied by urban developments, the Phoenician language gives way to Greek, and new cultural institutions (gymnasium, theatre) appear. Epigraphy and to a lesser extent archaeology keep traces of these transformations and their actors—the for…
From Paul Schröder’s archives on Cyprus, IV. The inscriptions from the Lang and Cesnola collections
During his trips to Cyprus in 1870 and 1873, the German orientalist and diplomat Paul Schröder, was able to study the Lang and Cesnola epigraphic collections. His correspondence with Justus Olshausen (an orientalist himself, but also a councillor of the Prussian Ministry of Education) contains precious information on some newly discovered important Phoenician and syllabic inscriptions. These derive mostly from Lang’s excavations and acquisitions …
Written evidence about textiles in ancient Cyprus is scanty. A handful of inscriptions and a few literary texts witness of some professional figures (fullers, purple workers, employees of the gymnasium in charge of the linen, launderers, weavers), and the glosses record some peculiar terms of the Cypriot dialect concerning textiles productions, clothes, shoes and hairdressing. The production of wool and above all flax is documented. It seems that…
Contacts between languages and writing systems are a recurrent motif in Mediterranean history. Characterised by linguistic conservatism, but at the same time exposed to a variety of influences, islands represent a privileged space for the analysis of such phenomena. Starting from Cyprus, where an impressive variety of languages and scripts is attested during the first Millennium B. C., through Rhodes and Delos, authentic beating heart of Mediterr…
