Disambiguating Between Privacy and Security in the Context of Health Care
Health care providers are increasingly providing technologies for patient care; however, patients are still loath to use such technologies consistently. This research examines the impediments to patients' use of e-health portals. Our analysis of 836 data records showed that while privacy and security concerns have a negative impact on attitudes toward e-health portals, increasing the awareness of privacy and security controls alleviates such conc…
The Effects of Stereotype Threat and Double-Minority Status on the Test Performance of Latino Women
This study investigated the interactive influences of diagnosticity instructions, gender, and ethnicity as they related to task performance. In a laboratory experiment of 120 male and female, Latino and White college students, both a gender-based and an ethnicity-based stereotype-threat effect were found to influence performance on a test of mathematical and spatial ability. Closer inspection revealed that the gender effect was qualified by ethni…
Relating the Internal Consistency of Scales to Rater Response Tendencies
The internal consistency of a scale (as indexed, for example, by coefficient alpha) is related directly to mean scale item intercorrelation. Various indices of rating scale response styles such as halo, leniency, and positive or negative response bias are also related to mean scale item intercorrelation. The nature of the consequent relationship between internal consistency and rating scale response styles is discussed
Confounding among Measures of Leniency and Halo
Because the variability of rating distributions decreases with leniency, common indices of the psychometric performance of rating data may be confounded. Lenient rating distributions, for example, should show lower average scale intercorrelations (a measure of halo) than do less lenient rating distributions. Although psychometric theory would predict such confounding, it does not permit the estimation of the magnitude of this phenomenon. Conseque…
