Open Access•Neal D Hoffman, Adam Ciarleglio et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

We describe a provider-focused intervention to increase universal HIV testing among adolescent users in a network of School-Based Health Centers (SBHC) and compare the rate of HIV test offer and acceptance for SBHCs with and without the HIV testing intervention. The intervention was implemented at the six largest SBHCs in the 12-site network and included system- and staff-level initiatives, including an implementation coach to support SBHC associ…

  • Expanded Medicaid dental coverage under the Affordable Care Act

Open Access•Nadia Laniado, Victor Badner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2017

The Minnesota experience suggests that the increase in Medicaid dental benefits through the ACA has significantly decreased NTDC visits, especially among young adults who were eligible for a dependent coverage policy that extends parents' health insurance to age 26. To our knowledge, no previous study has reported on the impact of early Medicaid expansion on the rate of ED use for NTDCs

  • Engaging and Sustaining Adolescents in Community-Based Participatory Research

    Marni LoIacono Merves, Caryn R R Rodgers et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2014

Community-Based Participatory Research partnerships typically do not include adolescents as full community partners. However, partnering with adolescents can enhance the success and sustainability of adolescent health interventions. We partnered with adolescents to address health disparities in a low-income urban community. In partnering with youth, it is important to consider their developmental stage and needs to better engage and sustain their…

  • Cumulative Social Disadvantage and Child Health

Laurie J Bauman, Ellen J Silver et al.•ARTICLE•PEDIATRICS•2006

CONTEXT. Disparities in child health are a major public health concern. However, it is unclear whether these are predominantly the result of low income, race, or other social risk factors that may contribute to their health disadvantage. Although others have examined the effects of the accumulation of risk factors, this methodology has not been applied to child health. OBJECTIVE. We tested 4 social risk factors (poverty, minority race/ethnicity, …

  • The Association of Sexual Experience with Attitudes, Beliefs, and Risk Behaviors of Inner‐City Adolescents

    Open Access•Ellen J Silver, Laurie J Bauman•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 6

We compared knowledge, attitudes, and demographic characteristics of 630 sexually experienced and 422 inexperienced inner‐city adolescents aged 14–17 years. Sexual experience was associated with indicators of risk previously reported in the literature: male gender, older age, single‐family home, smoking, drinking, and poorer academic performance. We found lower HIV knowledge in sexually inexperienced youth, which suggested an area of vulnerabilit…
