Belonging, student identity and school activity preferences
Students in East Asian locations often obtain high academic results in international high-stakes testing, but lower results on affective aspects of their schooling, such as sense of belonging. These findings indicate the need for more holistic research into children’s lifeworlds, including their experiences of school. In this article, we draw on a survey with 627 Year 4 students in three global cities in the Asia Pacific (Hong Kong, Singapore, an…
Children's Lifeworlds in a Global City
Children’s Lifeworlds in a Global City
Lifeworlds of nine- and ten-year-old children
There has been much discussion about the high performance of East Asian students in international high stakes testing, but little attention has been paid to their lifeworlds beyond school. In this article we explore findings from a survey of 627 Year 4 children (nine and ten years old) in three global cities (Hong Kong, Singapore, and Melbourne), focusing on their out-of-school activities as one aspect of their lifeworlds. The findings indicate t…
Long-Term Relations Among Prosocial-Media Use, Empathy, and Prosocial Behavior
Despite recent growth of research on the effects of prosocial media, processes underlying these effects are not well understood. Two studies explored theoretically relevant mediators and moderators of the effects of prosocial media on helping. Study 1 examined associations among prosocial- and violent-media use, empathy, and helping in samples from seven countries. Prosocial-media use was positively associated with helping. This effect was mediat…
Relating use of digital technology by pre-service teachers to confidence
Teachers today are expected to be able to apply a wide range of digital technologies in the classroom. Initial teacher education programs should prepare teachers to apply them with confidence. Pre-service teachers in Singapore responded to a survey on use of technologies in their personal lives and in their teaching, and how confident they were in using them. Among 17 applications, the most frequently used were those related to computer technolog…
A Confirmatory Factor Analytic Approach on Perceptions of Knowledge and Skills in Teaching (PKST)
This paper reports the cross-validation of the factor pattern of the Perceptions of Knowledge and Skills in Teaching (PKST) survey, which was used to assess the self-perceived pedagogical knowledge and skills of pre-service and beginning teachers. The sample comprised 323 pre-service teachers enrolled in a 1-yr. post-graduate teacher education program in Singapore. The survey had 37 items distributed across six scales: student learning, lesson pl…
Refining the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale
This article describes the validation and refinement of the short. 10-item version of the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help (E, H. Fischer & J. L. Turner. 1970) scale using 2 separate samples. Confirmatory factor analyses results provided evidence of factorial invariance across both samples, thus supporting the cross-validation of a revised 9-item measure
Processing causally relevant information
Two experiments tested an information-processing model of causal judgment proposed by D. L. Hamilton, P. D. Grubb, D. A. Acorn, T. K. Trolier, and S. Carpenter (1990). In Experiment 1 the explanatory quality (plausibility, sufficiency, and likelihood) of context information pertaining to a behavioral event was varied independently of its implications for internal or external causality. In Experiment 2 perceivers performed tasks requiring either i…
