The Consensus Sleep Diary
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To present an expert consensus, standardized, patient-informed sleep diary. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sleep diaries from the original expert panel of 25 attendees of the Pittsburgh Assessment Conference(1) were collected and reviewed. A smaller subset of experts formed a committee and reviewed the compiled diaries. Items deemed essential were included in a Core sleep diary, and those deemed optional were retained for an expanded diar…
Cluster analysis of insomniacsʼ MMPI profiles
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) profiles of 100 insomniacs who presented for treatment at a university medical center were analyzed by a hierarchical clustering procedure. This analysis revealed two major personality types that accounted for 88% of the sample. The two types referred to as "Type 1" and "Type 2" insomniacs differed significantly in regard to sleep history questionnaire responses and responsivity to treatment.…
Clinical Validity of the MMPI-168
This study investigated whether clinical judgments based on the MMPI-168 are comparable to those based on the standard MMPI. Each of 15 pairs of clinical psychologists were given a combination of short and standard form profiles from three psychiatric patients and asked both to complete an 18-item symptom rating scale for each patient and to decide upon each patient's diagnosis. Analyses of symptom ratings, with one exception, yielded non-signifi…
Validity of Invalid MMPI Profiles
While much literature suggested that highly elevated MMPI profiles are of questionable validity, Newmark and Sines (1972) found that even profiles with elevations ≥70 T on scales 1–9 have clinical significance. The two studies reported here were designed to investigate further such “floating profiles.” In Study I, MMPI profiles from 67 male psychiatric inpatients who produced “floating profiles” were subjected to Veldman's Hierarchical cluster an…
MMPI Short Forms
Although numerous studies have compared Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) short-form scores with scores obtained from the standard MMPI, recent (1980) reports by Butcher, Kendall, and Hoffman and Newmark, Woody, Ziff, and Finch suggest that a substantial interest in such comparisons may remain. It is questionable, however, whether further studies of this nature are warranted. In fan, such studies have only limited clinical signif…
Development and validation of a multidimensional multivariate model for accounting for infractions in a correctional setting
Effects of Team Play on Racial Prejudice
Previous research has suggested that intrateam cooperation and interteam competition serve to increase attraction among teammates. This study employed a card-game paradigm in an attempt to investigate the efficacy of these factors in enhancing interracial acceptance. 64 volunteer subjects in a drug abuse program were randomized in a 3 (type of game) × 2 (level of competition) × 2 (race) design. Results suggested the importance of both cooperation…
