Disability Representation in Social and Personality Psychology Research
We conducted a systematic state-of-the-art review examining disability representation of three flagship social and personality psychology journals between 2017 and 2022. First, we examined the 2,343 articles published in that time frame and found that 192 (8.19%) of them used at least one instance of disability-related terminology. Second, we examined patterns of disability-related terminology use and found that these concepts were most often use…
Sense of Purpose and Maladaptive Personality Traits in Older Adulthood
The current study examined the relationships between sense of purpose and 10 forms of maladaptive personality traits among older adults. In addition, we aimed to explore whether a sense of purpose was more strongly associated with these maladaptive personality traits than another well-being indicator, life satisfaction. Participants included 1,011 older adults ( M Age = 71.93, 56.15% female, 74.10% White, 23% Black) enrolled in the St Louis Perso…
A coordinated analysis of bidirectional associations between life satisfaction and cognitive function
Life satisfaction is an important component of well-being to consider in relation to cognitive function due to its modifiability, potential utility in public health policy, and associations with cognitive health outcomes. However, little is known about the directionality of the association between life satisfaction and cognitive function, and past longitudinal work has yielded mixed findings. Using a coordinated data analytic approach, the curren…
A Longitudinal Investigation of the Association Between Stroke and Loneliness
This research adds to a growing body of evidence demonstrating elevated loneliness among stroke survivors and highlights the need for interventions to increase social connectedness after stroke
Well-Being as a Protective Factor Against Cognitive Decline and Dementia
OBJECTIVES: Treatments that target the biological causes of dementia remain limited, making prevention critically important. Well-being-defined broadly as living in accordance with one's potential and experiencing one's life as enjoyable and satisfying-is a promising avenue for prevention. It can be targeted by large-scale, noninvasive interventions and has been linked with better cognitive health and lower dementia risk. In the current review, w…
Does Activism Mean Being Active? Considering the Health Correlates of Activist Purpose
Individuals with a purpose in life tend to experience better health outcomes, in part because they engage in healthier lifestyle behaviors. However, it is unclear whether these associations are due to the sense of purpose, or if the form of purpose may also correlate with health indicators. The current study examined this claim, with regard to activist purpose, or a commitment to engaging in social activism and causes, given that this type of pur…
