  • Caring school communities

Victor Battistich, Daniel Solomon et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Psychologist•1997

There recently has been a renewed appreciation of the importance of social context to effective schools. This article describes an ongoing program of research on schools as caring communities. The research spans about a decade and a half and involves a diverse set of elementary schools from across the United States. The findings indicate that sense of school community can be enhanced for both students and teachers, that it is associated with a wi…

  • Prevention Effects of the Child Development Project

Open Access•Victor Battistich, Eric Schaps et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•1996•Cited by: 13•References: 3

The Child Development Project is a comprehensive school program to reduce risk and bolster protective factors among children. It includes classroom, school, and family involvement elements that, collectively, help schools become caring communities of learners-environments that are characterized by supportive social relationships, a sense of common purpose, and a commitment to prosocial values; that are responsive to children's developmental and s…

  • Creating classrooms that students experience as communities

Open Access•Daniel Solomon, Marilyn Watson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•1996•Cited by: 12•References: 25

Although prior research has shown sense of community in schools to be related to many positive student characteristics, effective interventions that can create or enhance this sense have not been demonstrated. In this paper we describe a comprehensive elementary school program, implemented by teachers, that was successful in creating a sense of community in the classrooms, as perceived by students. The program was implemented in three elementary …

Hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine relationships between students' sense of school community, poverty level, and student attitudes, motives, beliefs, and behavior among a diverse sample of 24 elementary schools. Major findings were that: (a) within schools, individual students' sense of school community was significantly associated with almost all of the student outcome measures, (b) Between schools, school-level community and pover…

  • School-based primary prevention

Open Access•Catherine Lewis, Vic Battistich et al.•ARTICLE•New Directions for Child and…•1990

Our model makes us pessimistic about quick-fixes. Short-term, narrowly focused programs designed to increase children's knowledge or some limited aspect of their competence are unlikely to be effective in preventing AIDS. Our model suggests that what protects a child from AIDS is not knowledge or isolated social skills but rather the quality of bonds to school, family, and other socialization agents. Ultimately, the school-based route to preventi…

A program designed to enhance children’s prosocial development was conducted in three suburban elementary schools for 5 consecutive years, focusing primarily on a single cohort of children as it moved from kindergarten through fourth grade. Repeated observations were conducted each year to assess program implementation and student interpersonal behavior in classrooms in the three “program” schools and in three “comparison” schools. Analyses of th…

Cooperative learning techniques have been promoted for the development of social competencies and constructive peer relationships. One such technique, Jigsaw, was evaluated for its effects on students' attitudes and behaviors with regard to themselves, peers and school. Fifth- and sixth-grade teachers implemented Jigsaw for about 2 hours each week over a school year. Using a randomized invitation design, these teachers were compared with controls…
