Combining Instrumental Variable Estimators for a Panel Data Model with Factors
We address the estimation of factor-augmented panel data models using observed measurements to proxy for unobserved factors or loadings and explore the use of internal instruments to address the resulting endogeneity. The main challenge consists in that economic theory rarely provides insights into which measurements to choose as proxies when several are available. To overcome this problem, we propose a new class of estimators that are linear combi…
Quantiles of the gain distribution of an early childhood intervention
We investigate the distribution of gains among participants in the Infant Health and Development Program, an understudied randomized controlled trial that targets infants with low birth weight. Our primary focus is on assessing the effects in cognitive and health outcomes within distinct subgroups, which we define based on the outcomes that would occur in the absence of program participation. We propose a strategy to estimate the distribution of …
Welfare Reform and the Intergenerational Transmission of Dependence
We investigate the effect of welfare reform on intergenerational welfare participation, using mother-daughter pairs in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. We find that a mother’s Aid to Families with Dependent Children/Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (AFDC/TANF) participation increased her daughter’s odds of adult participation in that program by roughly 25 percentage points or more, but that welfare reform attenuated this transmission by…
Common correlated effects estimation of heterogeneous dynamic panel quantile regression models
This paper proposes a quantile regression estimator for a heterogeneous panel model with lagged dependent variables and interactive effects. The paper adopts the Common Correlated Effects (CCE) approach proposed in the literature and demonstrates that the extension to the estimation of dynamic quantile regression models is feasible under similar conditions to the ones used in the literature. The new quantile regression estimator is shown to be co…
Empowering Consumers Through Data and Smart Technology
This paper investigates the extent to which technology used to automate household responses to time‐of‐use pricing for electricity leads to higher energy savings than simply providing households with information on current prices and quantities. Using a large randomized field trial, we find that informed households with “smart” thermostats achieve impressive reductions in consumption during on‐peak periods of up to 48 percent, but also engage in …
