  • Where have all the arrows gone? A cross-cultural comparison of Lowland Maya and Central Ohio arrow use

    Open Access•Eric Olson•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2024

Arrow points are an abundant lithic resource, but exactly how abundant? Recent systematic surveys of the Mayan Lowlands and central Ohio permit a new cross-cultural comparison of arrow use, and factors that may lead to their differing accumulations in the archaeological record. Somewhat surprisingly, Mayan arrow use, at least in terms of recorded frequencies in the archaeological record, is less than that of Central Ohio Late Prehistoric populati…

  • Morphometric Analysis of Allometry and Modularity in Early Holocene Thebes and St. Charles Points of Midcontinental North America

Michael Shott, Michael J Shott et al.•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2024•References: 39

The Central Ohio Archaeological Digitization Survey (COADS) documented large samples of precontact artifacts, notably points, held by private collectors in south-central Ohio, in the United States. COADS captured two-dimensional images of several thousand points and several hundred three-dimensional images. Subjects were processed for landmark-based geometric morphometric (LGM) analysis as entire points and as stems only. Among other things, anal…

  • The Central Ohio Archaeological Digitization Survey

    Open Access•K C Nolan, Michael Shott et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Significant parts of the archaeological record are in private hands, including those of responsible and responsive stewards (RRS). This is not necessarily a bad thing. The Central Ohio Archaeological Digitization Survey (COADS) engages RRS in collaborative study of central Ohio prehistory. COADS leverages the mass of RRS data constructively to add depth and breadth to a regional archaeological record. We recorded over 12,000 diagnostic points and…

  • A Pilot Study in Archaeological Metal Detector Geophysical Survey

    Open Access•Eric Olson•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2022•References: 1

Metal detection (MD) has traditionally been viewed as a limited geophysical survey method for the identification of metal objects below the surface. However, this pilot study examines techniques utilizing the “ground balance” function, common to most modern metal detectors, to identify subsurface magnetic anomalies. The results of surveys have yielded inconclusive results on the use of metal detectors for feature identification. However, the resu…

  • Scale of Production at Prehistoric Quarries

    Michael Shott, Michael J Shott et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Prehistoric toolstone quarries often contain dense deposits of flake debris. Flakes can be sampled efficiently using standard probabilistic techniques in order to estimate their quantity. But the number of cobbles reduced to produce that debris is an equally valid measure of production scale. It cannot be estimated directly, partly because many cobbles are reduced to blanks and preforms that were exported from the quarries. “Analytical Core Conce…

  • Measuring the Economic Costs of Terrorism

Walter Enders, Eric Olson•BOOK•The Oxford handbook of the…•2012

Analyses of the costs and consequences of conflict usually focus on either civil wars or interstate conflict. The 9/11 attacks, however, have heightened interest regarding the costs of terrorism, a specific form of conflict in which violence is directed toward noncombatants or civilians who generally are not related to the political target of the perpetrating group. While terrorism can be seen as a specific tactic employed in internal and externa…

  • The Interdependence between Income and Education

    George S Tolley, Eric Olson•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1971•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Using single-equation approaches, previous studies concerned with human capital indicate that education expenditures have a large effect on income. Previous studies concerned with local government behavior indicate that income has a large effect on education expenditures. There is the possibility that essentially the same relationship is being measured, with dependent and independent variables merely interchanged. In this study, the equations are…
