  • Can information about jobs improve the effectiveness of vocational training? Experimental evidence from India

Open Access•Bhaskar Chakravorty, Wiji Arulampalam et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 2

We use a randomized experiment to evaluate the impact of providing richer information about prospective jobs to vocational trainees on their employment outcomes. The setting of the study is the vocational training program DDU-GKY in India. We find that including in the training two information sessions about placement opportunities make trainees 18% more likely to stay in the jobs in which they are placed. We provide suggestive evidence that the …

  • Impact of the Covid-19 crisis on India’s rural youth

    Open Access•Bhaskar Chakravorty, Apurav Yash Bhatiya et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper presents evidence on the short and long-term impact of the COVID-19 crisis on India’s rural youth. We interviewed about 2,000 vocational trainees from Bihar and Jharkhand three times after the first national lockdown in 2020, between June 2020 and December 2021. We find that a third of respondents who were in salaried jobs pre-lockdown lost their jobs, and half of those who worked out of state returned home shortly after the lockdown. …

  • How to Improve Tax Compliance? Evidence from Population-Wide Experiments in Belgium

Jan‐emmanuel De Neve, Clément Imbert et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2020•Cited by: 18•References: 1

We study the impact of simplification, deterrence, and tax morale on tax compliance. We ran four natural field experiments varying the communication of the tax administration with the universe of income taxpayers in Belgium throughout the tax process. A consistent picture emerges across experiments: (i) simplifying communication substantially increases compliance, (ii) deterrence messages have an additional positive effect, (iii) invoking tax mor…

  • Labor Market Effects of Social Programs

Clément Imbert, John Papp•ARTICLE•American Economic Journal Applied…•2015

We estimate the effect of a large rural workfare program in India on private employment and wages by comparing trends in districts that received the program earlier relative to those that received it later. Our results suggest that public sector hiring crowded out private sector work and increased private sector wages. We compute the implied welfare gains of the program by consumption quintile. Our calculations show that the welfare gains to the …

  • Decomposing the Labor Market Earnings Inequality

    Clément Imbert•BOOK•2013

In contrast with the typical transition to a market economy, earnings inequality in Vietnam between 1993 and 2006 appears to have decreased, and the earnings gap in favor of public employees appears to have widened. We use a comparative advantage model to disentangle the effect of sorting workers across sectors from the effect of the differences in returns to workers' skills. The selection of the best workers into the public sector is clearly an …
