Endogeneity in multiple output production: Evidence from the US hotel industry
Measuring and Decomposing Productivity Change: Stochastic Distance Function Estimation Versus Data Envelopment Analysis
Measuring productivity change with Malmquist indices has become common practice, because they are easily computed using nonparametric programming techniques and can be readily decomposed into technical and efficiency change. However, this approach is nonstochastic and requires a constant returns to scale assumption to construct the reference technology. We propose estimating productivity change using a stochastic input distance frontier, imposing…
The Valuation of Risks to Life: Evidence from the Market for Automobiles
Using hedonic regression techniques, estimates of the willingness-to-pay for changes in the risks of dying can be inferred from actual behavior in market situations involving risk-dollar tradeoffs. Thaler and Rosen (1975) pioneered this approach, obtaining estimates of the value of a statistical life using labor market data, in this paper we use the hedonic technique to obtain the first estimates of the value of a statistical life from data on th…
Terrorism in a Bargaining Framework
Few terrorist missions are suicidal. Most terrorist missions are against so-called soft targets and embody fairly elaborate escape plans. The threat of political terrorist generally emanates less from his desire for suicide than from his preparation, both mentally and physically, to take hostages and wait of the dialogue of negotiations.
The importance of specification uncertainty and intolerance to measurement error in a study of the impact of dentine lead on childrens’ IQs
Needleman et al. concluded that, on average, an increase in the dentine lead of children from 24 ppm was associated with a 4‐point IQ decrement. Recently, a spate of papers has conjectured that the reports of Needleman et al. and others could be spurious because of measurement error and omitted variable bias. In this Bayesian analysis of the reconstituted Needleman et al. data set, we replace such conjectures by empirical tests. Even though we st…
Flexible Modelling of Time to Failure in Risky Careers
Failure time models correcting for heterogeneity are used to explain the length of participation in a risky career. Using data from the National Football League, first we employ a class of techniques which ignore unobserved heterogeneity; hence these methods impose severe restrictions on the estimate hazard. We then examine a second class of techniques which correct for unobservables and thereby allow greater flexibility in the estimated hazard. …

A New Hedonic Technique for Estimating Attribute Demand: An Application to the Demand for Automobile Fuel Efficiency

A Test of Relative and Absolute Price Efficiency in Regulated Utilities
A model for testing all types of relative price inefficiency expands the Averch-Johnson effect and makes it possible to test for absolute price efficiency, which exists if the value of the marginal product for each factor is equated to factor price and implies both cost minimization and production of the optimal quantity of output. Duality theory is used to derive the empirical model using 1973 data for electric utilities. The results indicate th…
Interfuel Substitution in Steam Electric Power Generation
A translog normalized restricted profit function is used to study the characteristics of the production function for electric energy. The results indicate that fuel choice in existing steam electric plants responds to changes in fuel prices. The production function is also tested for separability of fuels from capital and labor, homotheticity, returns to scale, and embodied technical change
