Just Sleeping
Just Sleeping Once I saw a raccoon asleep, in a hole in a leaf-bare winter tree. Far across a field and limp with slumber, it curled up close in my binoculars. Though I’d gone out looking for a feathered thing, it pleased me to see a wild creature so deep in peace. After the war, I always had dreams of wild, wild things and they were always men doing the unspeakable deeds we did in the war. Once, when my dear wife was pregnant, she had a dream of…
Fanfare
Fanfare Whatever is wasted or wanted In this country of glass and flint Some garden will use, once planted. Louise Bogan 1. A hollow pipe, wide and round as the muzzle of a grenade launcher, serves as a doorpost to my fenced-in garden. When wind blows across its mouth and this meadow, it pipes a lead-steady, bassoon-like note Odysseus might have known, crossing the fearsome universe between war and home. I think I hear it in my sleep, and mistake…
The Five Words
The Five Words If you tell me, Thank you for your service, and I think you are sincere, especially if I think you are sincere, I will tell you some dark particulars of that service, and once come to light like a stain on porcelain, say, it will spot your heart and blot the smile from your child’s face forever. See, the way it happens, when bad happens, it’s fast, you’re slow and become its keeper, carrying it home and to your grave, and no thanks…
The Psychoanalytic Study of Lives in Natural Social Settings
Psychoanalysis, as the psychological theory giving greatest attention to the molar organization of individual behaviorat dispositions in a developmental perspective, has much to contribute to a psychology of the life cycle. That it has contributed less than anticipated is because its investigative use outside clinical practice has been too closely wedded to traditional psychological testing. Personality researchers have misunderstood the degree t…

Treatment of Anxiety about College Tests with Negative Practice and Systematic Desensitization
72 test-anxious subjects were assigned to three treatment groups and two control groups for 6 weekly sessions. Treatment conditions were negative practice with and without homework instructions and systematic desensitization. The two control conditions involved a psychoanalytically oriented attention-placebo group and a waiting-list, no-treatment group. There were no differences in grade point average between groups following treatment. Only the …

Random Variations and Sampling Models in Production Economics
An Index of the Discriminating Power of a Test at Different Parts of the Score Range
An important characteristic of any test is its ability to discriminate among examinees who differ in ability. The conventional reliability and validity coefficients are indices of discrimination for the test as a whole; however, except under certain limited conditions, these over-all indices do not apply at all points along the score scale. The purpose of the present paper is to provide such an index and illustrate its use
