Affective Responses to 3D Body Scan Technology
3D body scanning technology is becoming increasingly popular in the apparel and health industries due to its accessibility, affordability, and precision. 3D images offer biometrically accurate images for estimating body shape and size, which may align mental constructs of the body with an objective body assessment, which would be helpful in illustrating the effects of treatments or interventions for lifestyle‐related diseases and body image disor…
‘I just want a shirt that will fit me!’
Transgender consumers are often unable to express their identity or construct their appearance in the way they desire. Social realities inhibit realness, and it can be difficult or even impossible for them to externally realize their full identity (Gray 2009). The purpose of this research is to understand how transgender consumers’ gender identity influences their shopping experiences. Utilizing a lens of gender performativity theory, the researc…
The Most Swipeable You
For the past ten years, social networking sites and mobile apps have become increasingly influential as mechanisms through which socialization occurs, particularly for adolescents and young adults (e.g., Ellison et al.; McLean et al.; Trekels et al.; Tiggemann et al.). However, the influence and effects of social media may be even more harmful than traditional media (e.g., TV, magazines) because information and images are always available for oth…

Sold out or bought in? Complexities of the X Swatch as subcultural accessory for the straight edge scene
This research explores lifestyle consumerism and inquires into a subcultural community’s use of a mainstream fashion object to express alternative values. The ‘X-rated Swatch Watch’ is extremely popular within straight edge, a clean-living punk offshoot in which participants abstain from alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs. Swatch first released the watch in 1987 with a black band and white face featuring a large black ‘X’, a prominent symbol in t…

Beyond Subculture the Meaning of Style
Youth and music-oriented subcultures use dress to embody lifestyle, ethos, individuality, and showcase their perspectives. This literature review analyzes academic writing on dress in conjunction with subculture that has emerged since Dick Hebdige wrote a defining text, Subculture: The Meaning of Style in 1979 and David Muggleton wrote a reaction book, Subculture: The Postmodern Meaning of Style in 2000. Twenty years later, at the same interval b…

Appearance and performance enhancing drug usage and psychological well-being in gay and heterosexual men
The current study examined the relationship between appearance and performance enhancing drug use and the men’s sexual orientation to body image and psychological well-being in a sample of 537 heterosexual men and 146 gay men. Using objectification theory as a framework, we proposed that gay men who used appearance and performance enhancing drugs (APEDs) would report the most distress across our measures of body image, internalization, and psycho…
Sexual orientation, eating disorder classification, and men’s psychosocial well-being
In a sample of 676 men, we examined (a) the relationship between men's eating disorder (ED) classification (asymptomatic vs. symptomatic/clinical) to theoretically and empirically identified psychosocial correlates (i.e., body image concerns, sociocultural pressures, internalization processes, and depressive symptomatology) and (b) determined the extent to which sexual orientation moderated those relationships. To test our hypotheses, we used the…

Renegotiating gender through dress in Bollywood
Drawing upon the components of the social role theory and postcolonial theory, this study examined the role of Bollywood diaspora films on the formation or renegotiation of identity among non-resident Indian women as manifested in their dress. We were specifically interested in the creation of a new hybrid Indian identity for young women of the diaspora, the women who are able to move seamlessly between their two worlds, and in looking at the rol…

Bout Time! Renegotiating the Body in Roller Derby
Victorian gear heads and locomotive zealots
This article explored the histories of both Steampunk and Dieselpunk with a focus on their dress behaviour and musical preferences as related to the ideologies of these groups. Particular attention was paid to both group’s fixations on nostalgia for periods outside of the individual members’ living memories and how this nostalgia is a feature of their consumption experiences. The article also addresses the anachronistic use of the word ‘punk’ in …
Evaluative criteria of diamond jewellery used in the decision-making process
Given the growing importance of ethnicity in America and the unique nature of diamonds, this study formally asked whether an ethnicity effect exists in diamond jewellery attribute preferences (shape, cut, colour, clarity, weight, type, treatment, venue, certification, willingness to spend and origin of the diamond) and, if it does, what differences and similarities have been expressed by the key ethnic consumer groups in America. Survey data were…
