The Hidden Toll of the Climate Crisis
Experiencing a flood has been shown to have a significant impact on people's mental health. However, the qualitative evidence exploring these experiences remains sparse and has not been systematically synthesised. This systematic review synthesised qualitative evidence of the impact of flooding on mental health among adults in Europe. A narrative synthesis approach was adopted to thematically analyse data from six databases and additional grey li…
Early Years Physical Activity and Motor Skills Intervention—A Feasibility Study to Evaluate an Existing Training Programme for Early Years Educators
change in Educators' knowledge, intentions and behaviour, and change in children's BMI z-score, PA and FMS. Eight settings were recruited; all Intervention Educators completed the training. Questionnaires were completed by 80% of Intervention Educators at baseline, 20% at follow-up. Control Educator…
The Association between Physical Activity, Motor Skills and School Readiness in 4–5-Year-Old Children in the Northeast of England
The benefits of being physically active, possessing good motor skills and being school-ready are well documented in early years. Nevertheless, the association between physical activity and motor skills with school readiness remains unknown. Children's PA (A…

Structures of Bio-terrorism Preparedness in the UK and the US
This article describes UK and US responses to 9/11 and the subsequent anthrax attacks, referring to ‘biodefence’ and the civilian structures of disaster preparedness. Following a review of initiatives undertaken in each country the article details principal differences between the two systems, the federal nature of the US response and the more localised arrangements preferred in the UK. Finally, with reference to certain international standards a…
The Significance of the Frontier in World History
Take a walk down the streets of any town in the western United States and you will see the legacy of a frontier: not the exceptional frontier of American mythology, but a fragment of the global frontier of European expansion over the last five hundred years. European weeds on the sidewalks, Eurasian microbes in Caucasian bodies, crosses on the church and in the cemetery, and Old World crops growing in the fields outside of town, all provide evide…
Body handlers after terrorism in Oklahoma City
Posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms were assessed in 51 body handlers after Oklahoma City's 1995 terrorist bombing. Although many handlers were inexperienced and knew someone killed, symptoms were low postdisaster and decreased significantly after 1 year. Higher symptomatology and seeking mental health treatment correlated with increases in alcohol use and new physical problems but not with demographics, exposure, or experience. Four res…
George Herbert Mead and Sigmund Freud
While both Sigmund Freud and George Herbert Mead approach the study of the individual mind by specifying the importance of social influence on its formation and behavior, differences between them in emphasis and orientation exemplify the diversity which the new concern with group phenomena permitted
