Comparisons of Higher-Order Thinking Skills among Prospective Freshmen and Upper-Level Preservice Music Education Majors
Deborah A. Sheldon, Gregory DeNardo, Comparisons of Higher-Order Thinking Skills among Prospective Freshmen and Upper-Level Preservice Music Education Majors, Journal of Research in Music Education, Vol. 53, No. 1 (Spring, 2005), pp. 40-50
Effects of Multiple Listenings on Error-Detection Acuity in Multivoice, Multitimbral Musical Examples
This study is an investigation of the effects of multiple listenings on error-detection identification and labeling accuracy among brass and woodwind instrumentalists. Examples derived from band music used balanced four-voice incipits performed with differing timbres, and errors that occurred in one or multiple voices. Response rates for correct and incorrect identification and labeling of errors were greatest during the first listening, less for…

Preservice and In-Service Teachers' Perceptions of Band Music Content and Quality Using Self-Report and Behavioral Measures
This study is an examination of experienced and inexperienced teachers' perceptions of band music content and quality in three experimental settings. Estimates of time focusing on musical elements and perceptions of difficulty and quality of a mid-level band work after silent score study and after listening were investigated. In a separate study, participants demonstrated musical element focus using an operant measure while simultaneously listeni…
The Effects of Live Accompaniment, Intelligent Digital Accompaniment, and No Accompaniment on Musicians' Performance Quality
This study is an investigation of differences in performance-quality ratings among college-age instrumentalists grouped in three solo preparation conditions using (a) no accompaniment, (b) live accompaniment, or (c) intelligent digital accompaniment. After a 6-week practice period, participants performed an intermediate level solo on a secondary wind instrument in two conditions: (1) without accompaniment, and (2) within prescribed accompaniment …
Effects of Contextual Sight-Singing and Aural Skills Training on Error-Detection Abilities
Effects of contextual sight-singing and ear training on pitch and rhythm error detection abilities among undergraduate instrumental music education majors were examined. Experimental (n 1 = 15) and control (n 2 = 15) groups received identical training in instrumental methods and conducting. Experimental subjects additionally received 50 minutes of sight-singing and ear training per week over 11 weeks using materials drawn from extant band reperto…
Perception of Tempo Modulation by Listeners of Different Levels of Educational Experience
This study was designed to investigate the similarities and differences in how listeners with different levels of educational experience demonstrate perception of tempo modulation in music using a Continuous Response Digital Interface (CRDI). Subjects ( N = 210) were divided into seven education-level groups of 30 subjects each. Musical experience ranged from minimal through extensive. Melodies gradually increased or decreased in tempo from a beg…
The Illinois School for the Deaf Band
From 1923 until 1942, the Illinois School for the Deaf included in its offerings for its resident boys the opportunity to participate in a brass band. The band was supported by state and private funds throughout its nearly twenty-year existence. It gave students a musical outlet, provided functional music and entertainment for the other resident students as well as community members, and became a symbol of strength and ability among members of th…
Effects of Tempo, Musical Experience, and Listening Modes on Tempo Modulation Perception
In this study, I investigated the effects of tempo direction, listening mode, and level of subjects' musical experience on speed and accuracy in tempo change detection abilities. Tempo-change and direction-change examples gradually decelerated, accelerated, or remained steady. Listening mode included listening only, listening and watching a conductor, and listening and moving. The two levels of musical experience were defined as music majors ( n …
