Effects of Choir Spacing and Riser Step Heights on Acoustic and Perceptual Measures of Satb Choir Sound Acquired From Four Microphone Positions in Two Performance Halls
We assessed the effects of singing in two venues on acoustic and perceptualmeasures of performances by an SATB choir ( N = 28) as it sang in three spacing conditions, on two different riser unit heights, with data acquired from four microphone locations in each hall. Among primary acoustic results, long-term average spectra measures yielded a systematic pattern of significant contrasts between close and spread spacing conditions, with decreasing …
Monkey See, Monkey Do? The Effect of Nonverbal Conductor Lip Rounding on Visual and Acoustic Measures of Singers’ Lip Postures
If singers, without prior prompting, mimicked a conductor’s nonverbal behavior and if this mimicry changed their vocal sound in less than a second, then such a phenomenon could interest vocal music teachers as a time-efficient pedagogical strategy. We tested this claim (“What they see, you will get”), which appears in choral methods literature, by measuring visual and acoustic responses to one nonverbal conductor behavior in a particular singing …
Student Voice Use and Vocal Health During an All-State Chorus Event
This field-based case study documented students’ ( N = 256) voice use and voice health perceptions during a 3-day all-state high school chorus event through daily surveys, phonation duration data, analysis of rehearsal voice use behaviors, and field notes. Among the primary results are the following: (a) First and final day survey comparisons indicated significant declining changes in 5 of 7 voice health indicator statements and in self-perceptio…
Spacing, Formation, and Choral Sound
The purpose of this study was to assess preferences of auditors ( N = 160) and choristers ( N = 46) relative to choral sound of an SATB high school choir in two choral formations (block sectional and mixed) and three spacings (close, lateral, and circumambient). Six conditions of a 30-second homophonic choral excerpt were sung and recorded digitally. Auditors listened to 10 pairs of randomly ordered excerpts, expressing preference for most pleasi…
