  • Effects of straw phonation on choral acoustic and perceptual measures after an acclimation period

Open Access•Jeremy N Manternach, Amy Kotsonis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Music…•2022

A single session of vocalizing through a straw (straw phonation) has been associated with consistent or increased acoustic output and chorister-reported improved choral sound and vocal efficiency. Some choristers, however, report discomfort from the intense pressure of vocalizing through a stirring straw (2.5–3.0 mm opening). It is unclear whether participants acclimate to this pressure over time. Two mixed and two treble choirs sang a unison mel…

  • Effects of Straw Phonation and Neutral Vowel Protocols on the Choral Sound of Two Matched Women’s Choirs

Open Access•Jeremy N Manternach, Matthew J Schloneger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2018

Many choral teacher-conductors and voice professionals utilize semioccluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises (e.g., lip trills, straw phonation) in their classrooms or studios. Research with individual singers has indicated that these techniques may increase “vocal economy,” boosting acoustic output while reducing singer effort. Recently, researchers have investigated these phenomena in choral settings, finding that choirs have maintained or increase…

  • Student Voice Use and Vocal Health During an All-State Chorus Event

Open Access•James F Daugherty, Jeremy N Manternach et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2010

This field-based case study documented students’ ( N = 256) voice use and voice health perceptions during a 3-day all-state high school chorus event through daily surveys, phonation duration data, analysis of rehearsal voice use behaviors, and field notes. Among the primary results are the following: (a) First and final day survey comparisons indicated significant declining changes in 5 of 7 voice health indicator statements and in self-perceptio…
