  • Field Dependence-Independence and College Nonmusic Majors' Description and Identification of Music Excerpts

    Open Access•Mark C Ellis•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1995•References: 2

In this investigation of the effects of field dependence-independence (FDI), general mental ability, previous music experience, and gender on music listening, 148 students enrolled in a college introductory music class recorded observations about eight music excerpts. After 1 week and again after 2 weeks, subjects used their observations to identify the excerpts. A series of multiple-regression analyses was used to examine the unique contribution…

  • Tempo Perception and Performance of Elementary Students, Grades 3-6

    Open Access•Mark C Ellis•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The tempo perception and performance abilities of 80 elementary students in Grades 3-6 were investigated by means of two tests of tempo perception and one test of tempo performance. Scores for (a) the detection of gradual tempo changes, (b) the discrimination of differences in tempo pairs, and (c) the steadiness of tempo performance increased in a linear fashion from Grade 3 to Grade 6. Although scores for the accuracy ofreproducing a given tempo…

  • Field Dependence/Independence in College Nonmusic Majors and Their Ability to Discern Form in Music

    Open Access•Mark C Ellis, Clair W McCoy•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1990•References: 2

To examine the effects of cognitive-style field dependence/field independence on the ability to discern form in music, two tests, the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) and an author-designed Musical Form Test (MFT) were given to 119 students enrolled in a college introductory music course. An ANOVA indicated field-independent (FI) subjects scored significantly higher ( p < .001) than did field-dependent (FD) subjects on the MFT. Chi-square analy…
