  • Digital uprating of the soil organic carbon map of Slovakia

Vasyl Cherlinka, Michal Gallay et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Sustainable land management and fulfilment of climate obligations need accurate spatial information on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. A national map of SOC in Slovakia (0–20 cm) at 25 m resolution is uprated from the global GSOCmap (30arcsec) by spatial disaggregation using a comprehensive set of high-resolution predictors: terrain parameters, climate data, ecosystem productivity indicators, and information on land cover and soil types. Techni…

  • Predictive soil map of Slovakia: A digital twin for decision makers

Vasyl Cherlinka, Michal Gallay et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Fragmentation of detailed soil mapping constrains decision-making in many fields; in Slovakia, 1:5 000-scale mapping of soil ecological units (BPEU) extends only to farmland. So, we have used machine learning to create nationwide, high-resolution soil maps employing both the Slovak soil classification and the World Reference Base. The Random Forest algorithm was used to integrate BPEU data with terrain parameters derived from digital elevation mo…

  • How is Gaia doing? Trends in global land degradation and improvement

Open Access•Zhanguo Bai, Jason Daniel Russ et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2025•References: 38

Land degradation is holding back attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals and exacerbating global heating. Land degradation and improvement since 1981 have been assessed by proxy using remotely sensed Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), translated into net primary productivity. The quantitative data show the extent and trends of changes over four decades and identify where further action is needed. During 1981–2021, 28.5% of lan…

  • Hidden in plain sight. Global heating, the small water cycle, and the social contract

Philip Mulvey, Freya Mulvey et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Greenhouse gases do not generate heat. Bare ground is the furnace: vegetation and the water cycle provide the air-conditioning. Heat is emitted as infrared radiation; greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb some of this outgoing radiation which then heats the atmosphere or is reabsorbed by the land and, mainly, the oceans. So, control of greenhouse gas emissions is necessary and urgent – but it will not be enough to arrest global heating and do…

  • Soils in war and peace

Yuriy Dmytruk, Vasyl Cherlinka et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Our purpose is a preliminary assessment of the effects of war in Ukraine on its soils. Realistic diagnosis demands details at the scale at which war operates. Lacking a soil map at this scale, and a new survey being out of the question, we modelled a predictive soil map of the whole country at scale 1:10,000. This enables accurate assessment of the areas of damage and the ecosystem services foregone. Mimicking personalised medicine and the precis…

  • A candle in the wind

David Dent, Boris Boincean et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Soil is the biggest brake on global heating. It holds more carbon than the atmosphere and all standing vegetation together but farmers have been burning off soil organic matter for 12000 years: they are responsible for one-third of greenhouse gas emissions. The best thing they could do for the planet is to put it back again, and the best place to start is the best soil in the world – the Black Earth of the steppes, prairies and pampas. Half of it…

  • Running out. In search of water on the High Plains, and Up to Heaven and Down to Hell. Fracking, freedom, and community in an American town

    David Dent•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The High Plains have been pillaged by a society of wreckers. Finding abundance, they slaughtered bison by the millions to exterminate the Plains Indians; they ploughed the sod and created the Dust

  • A standard for soil health

    David Dent•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

To qualify for payments from the public purse, farmers will not only have to produce food but, also, demonstrate good stewardship by delivering public goods: arresting soil erosion, abating floods, recharging groundwater, mitigating global heating, etc. Moreover, discerning consumers seek guarantees of sustainable food production that are not provided by prices and labelling. The proposed Standard for Soil Health meets a felt need by comparing th…

  • Thin on the ground: Soil science in the tropics

    David Dent•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Between 1950 and 1980, most of the actual and potential agricultural land in the tropics was covered by surveys of natural resources: soils, climate and vegetation – an astounding achievement by ra

  • What Is Hooking Up? Examining Definitions of Hooking Up in Relation to Behavior and Normative Perceptions

Melissa A Lewis, David C Atkins et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2012•Cited by: 23•References: 4

Research has demonstrated ambiguity about the definition of hooking up among college students. The current research examined whether there were multiple definitions of hooking up among college students and how different definitions might be associated with the participant's own hooking up behavior and normative perceptions of peer hooking up behavior. A random sample (N = 1,468) of undergraduates (56.4% female) completed a Web-based survey compos…

  • Recent Land Degradation and Improvement in China

Zhanguo Bai, David Dent•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2009•Cited by: 1

Land degradation is a global development and environment issue that afflicts China more than most countries in terms of the extent, economic impact, and number of people affected. Up-to-date, quantitative information is needed to support policy and action for food and water security, economic development, and environmental integrity. Data for a defined, recent period enable us to distinguish the legacy of historical land degradation from what is …

  • Proxy global assessment of land degradation

    Open Access•Zhanguo Bai, Z G Bai et al.•ARTICLE•Soil Use and Management•2008

Land degradation is always with us but its causes, extent and severity are contested. We define land degradation as a long‐term decline in ecosystem function and productivity, which may be assessed using long‐term, remotely sensed normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data. Deviation from the norm may serve as a proxy assessment of land degradation and improvement – if other factors that may be responsible are taken into account. These ot…

  • Valuation of the Environmental Impact of Wetland Flood Protection and Drainage Schemes

Open Access•R Kerry Turner, David Dent et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1983•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Large areas of the remaining wetlands in the United Kingdom are faced with virtual extinction because of the pressures engendered by high productivity farming practices, reinforced by subsidised land drainage and flood protection schemes as well as by price supports for agricultural produce in the European Economic Community. Unique environmental resources are being put at risk by changing farming methods and in particular by arable conversion sc…
