BACKGROUND: To advance early identification efforts, we must detect and characterize neurodevelopmental sequelae of risk among population-based samples early in development. However, variability across the typical-to-atypical continuum and heterogeneity within and across early emerging psychiatric/neurodevelopmental disorders represent fundamental challenges to overcome. Identifying multidimensionally determined profiles of risk, agnostic to DSM …
Considerations for Pairing Cognitive Behavioral Therapies and Non-invasive Brain Stimulation
Multimodal approaches combining cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) with non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) hold promise for improving the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. As this is a relatively new approach, it is a critical time to identify guiding principles and methodological considerations to enhance research rigor. In the current paper, we argue for a principled approach to CBT and NIBS pairings based on synergistic activation …
Neonatal physiological regulation is associated with perinatal factors
Maternal mental health and prenatal stress are linked with neurobehavioral differences in the offspring. The majority of studies documenting this effect have been conducted using either predominantly European American infants or minority infants exposed to teratogens in utero. In this study, we focus on healthy African American women from low‐income environments to investigate the earliest individual differences in biobehavioral regulation, inclu…
Diagnosis and Treatment of Conduct Disorder
As many as 5 percent of preadolescent boys, 8 percent of adolescent boys and a quarter to a half that percentage of girls of those same ages fulfill criteria for a diagnosis of conduct disorder [1]. In contrast to isolated behavior problems, this diagnosis requires a repeated, persistent pattern of violating the rights of others and age-appropriate societal rules for six months or more. Multiple factors are probably responsible for this developme…
Women's sexual experience during the menstrual cycle
Imprecise measures of ovulation obscure the relationship between women's sexuality and the menstrual cycle, as does studying women with different contraceptive goals in different social contexts. Here we present a novel noninvasive method to precisely pinpoint the preovulatory surge of Luteinizing Hormone (LH), demarcating hormonally distinct cycle phases with greater than 95% reliability. Women were more sexually active on days prior to and incl…
