A Mixed Methods Analysis of Risk and Support Factors for Prenatal Alcohol and Substance Use Among American Indian/Alaska Native Birthing People
A descriptive examination of rurality in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Cohort
PURPOSE: The Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Cohort has enrolled over 60,000 children to examine how early environmental factors (broadly defined) are associated with key child health outcomes. The ECHO Cohort may be well-positioned to contribute to our understanding of rural environments and contexts, which has implications for rural health disparities research. The present study examined the outcome of child obesity to …

Association of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Perinatal Maternal Depression with Early Childhood Behavioral Problems
This study examined the association of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), prenatal, and postnatal maternal depressive symptoms with externalizing, internalizing, and autism spectrum problems on the Preschool Child Behavior Checklist in 2379 children aged 4.12 ± 0.60 (48% female; 47% White, 32% Black, 15% Mixed Race, 4% Asian, <2% American Indian/Alaskan Native, <2% Native Hawaiian; 23% Hispanic). Data were collected from the NIH Environmental i…
Community‐based system dynamics modelling of stigmatized public health issues
Utility of community‐based system dynamics (CBSD) models on stigmatized public health issues and health disparities depends upon how representative the model is to real‐world experience within the community. ‘Personal experience’ participants (PEP), especially from marginalized groups, are essential model contributors but are often underrepresented in modelling groups due to multiple barriers. This study details a method to increase PEP represent…
Punch-Drunk or Drunken Boxing? The Etiology of Alcohol-Related Physical Violence through Adolescence and Young Adulthood
BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related physical violence (ARPV) can be a causal consequence of alcohol consumption, but only for specific individuals (e.g., those predisposed to violence). Studies have not accounted for the shared etiology explaining comorbidity between alcohol use and violent behavior as a potential third-variable explanation of ARPV. The current study examined genetically-informed associations between ARPV, heavy alcohol use (HAU) and ove…
Developmental Change in Adolescent Delinquency
Dynamic Change Between Intimate Partner Violence and Contraceptive Use Over Time in Young Adult Men’s and Women’s Relationships
The negative association between intimate partner violence (IPV) and contraceptive use is well established, but much of this research treats the association as static (e.g., similar across all relationships over development or time). Such studies do not account for individual development of sexual and romantic relationship mental, social, and behavioral well-being, which relate to contraceptive use. These studies are also predominantly woman-focu…
US Latino adolescents’ use of mass media and mediated communication in romantic relationships
The present study uses uncertainty reduction theory to analyze how Latino adolescents perceive that mass media influence their conceptions of romantic relationships. In addition, we explore how these adolescents use social media in their romantic relationships. Data are from five focus groups with 44 Latino adolescents (M = 16.39 years old; 59% female) in the US Midwest. Findings indicate that Latino adolescents believe media portray unrealistic …
Gender, Generational Status, and Parent–Adolescent Sexual Communication
There is little research on how specific parent-adolescent sexual communication topics influence Latino/a youth's sexual behaviors, and how gender and generational status may moderate effects. This study examined effects of three different messages on intercourse and condom use among 1944 Latino/as from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (T1 mean age=15.46; sd=1.50). Results indicated discussing health consequences predicted hig…
A Longitudinal Examination of Parenting Processes and Latino Youth’s Risky Sexual Behaviors
The Role of Gender and Friends’ Gender on Peer Socialization of Adolescent Drinking
A Noncausal Relation Between Casual Sex in Adolescence and Early Adult Depression and Suicidal Ideation
Research on relations between casual sex and mental health is inconclusive; while some studies indicate casual sex may lead to more negative mental health (e.g., depression), other studies report no such relationship. Using a genetically informed approach, this study examined whether earlier casual sex (i.e., ever engaging in casual sex and number of casual sex partners) in adolescence has a causal influence on later mental health in young adulth…
Sexual Self-Concept
One theoretical concept receiving modest attention in contemporary sex research is the sexual self-concept (SSC). However, a lack of cohesion within this research has culminated in a collection of SSC models which overlap one another but which are not exactly the same. Therefore, a unified conceptual model of SSC needs to be established. In addition, little research has examined potential differences between genders in SSC, as most SSC research h…
Parent and Peer Pathways to Adolescent Delinquency
Commentary
The N ew H ope evaluation generated a variety of useful findings that will help guide future iterations of antipoverty policymaking, despite the fact that the intervention was only selectively effective and impacts were generally short lived. The evaluation process itself, however, representing a blend of sound design, mixed methods, and theories drawn from psychological anthropology as well as other disciplines, is likely to significantly shape …
