  • Case report: Anti-CARPVIII autoantibody-associated mixed dementia

Open Access•Niels Hansen, Bianca Teegen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Our finding adds severe cognitive impairment to the spectrum of anti-CARPVIII-associated disease. However, detecting anti-CARPVIII antibodies may also be an incidental finding in conjunction with typical mixed dementia. Further studies are needed to evaluate the relevance of these clinical findings

  • Cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in psychiatric autoimmune encephalitis: A retrospective cohort study

Open Access•Niels Hansen, Aaron Levin Juhl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Our results suggest that neuroaxonal brain damage may occur in specific psychiatric AEs associated with IgLON5, glycine, recoverin, and titin autoantibodies. Further research should focus on the CSF/serum IgM ratio as an early marker of autoantibody production in pAE compared to AD as a potential biomarker for differential diagnosis

  • Performance evaluation of automated white matter hyperintensity segmentation algorithms in a multicenter cohort on cognitive impairment and dementia

    Open Access•Malo Gaubert, Andrea Dell’Orco et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

To conclude, the deep learning algorithm, when retrained, performed well in the multicenter context. Nevertheless, the performance was close to traditional methods. We provide methodological recommendations for future studies using automated WMH segmentation to quantify and assess WMH along the continuum of cognitive impairment and AD dementia

  • Case report: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment in multiple domains associated with neurofascin 186 autoantibodies: Case series with follow-up and review

Open Access•Niels Hansen, Anne Sagebiel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

We report on two individuals presenting MCI associated with neurofascin 186 antibodies, thus expanding the potential spectrum of neurofascin 186-associated disease. This report supports the recommendation to consider also neurofascin 186 autoantibodies in not just peripheral nerve disease, but also in disorders involving CNS autoimmunity. More studies are needed to clarify the lack of association between neurofascin 186 autoantibodies and cogniti…

  • Case report: Mixed dementia associated with autoantibodies targeting the vesicular glutamate transporter 2

Open Access•Niels Hansen, Bianca Teegen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first to describe mixed dementia associated with VGlut2 autoantibodies

  • Establishment of a teaching hospital-based dementia consultation service for rurally-based regional district general hospitals

Open Access•Björn H Schott, Jakob Christian Voetlause et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Objective: The treatment of patients with dementia poses a considerable challenge to regional district general hospitals, particularly in rural areas. Here we report the establishment and initial evaluation of a dementia-specific consultation service provided by a teaching hospital-based Psychiatry Department to regional district general hospitals in surrounding smaller towns. Methods: telemedicine - was performed to assess the needs of the parti…

  • Prevalence of Anti-neural Autoantibodies in a Psychiatric Patient Cohort-Paradigmatic Application of Criteria for Autoimmune-Based Psychiatric Syndromes

Open Access•Niels Hansen, Aaron Levin Juhl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Neural autoantibodies were detected mainly in patients presenting neurocognitive and mood disorders in our psychiatric cohort. The phenotypical appearance of psychiatric syndromes in conjunction with neural autoantibodies did not differ from those without neural autoantibodies. More research is therefore warranted to optimize biomarker research to help clinicians differentiate patients with potential neural autoantibodies when a rapid clinical re…

  • Psychopathology of psychiatric patients presenting autoantibodies against neuroglial antigens

Open Access•Insa Maria Grenzer, Aaron Levin Juhl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Our findings indicate that neural autoantibodies in psychiatric patients could indicate a phenotype more often characterized by a manic syndrome, orientation disturbances within the cognitive spectrum, and fewer affect disturbances characterized by less blunted affect and not as seriously impaired feelings of vitality compared to controls. The novelty of our approach is the extensive autoantibody tests for various psychiatric syndromes in combina…

  • City Environment and Occurrence of Neural Autoantibodies in Psychiatric Patients

Open Access•Niels Hansen, Aaron Levin Juhl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

The inherently different aspects of rural and urban environments do not appear to be relevant in determining the frequency of neural autoantibodies in psychiatric patients in Lower Saxony, Thuringia, and Hessen in Germany. Furthermore, large-scale studies involving other states across Germany should be conducted to exclude any regional differences and to examine the tendency of a higher frequency in large cities of autoimmune-mediated psychiatric…

  • Impaired Verbal Memory Recall in Patients With Axonal Degeneration and Serum Glycine-Receptor Autoantibodies—Case Series

Open Access•Niels Hansen, Claudia Bartels et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Our results suggest that axonal neurodegeneration and especially impaired verbal memory recall in addition to deficits in verbal and figural memory characterize patients with progressive cognitive impairment associated with glycine receptor antibodies. This unresolved issue should be clarified by researchers to discover whether axonal degeneration is merely an age-related phenomenon or one related to glycine-receptor autoantibodies in old age. Co…

  • Case Report: Anti-flotillin 1/2 Autoantibody-Associated Atypical Dementia

Open Access•Niels Hansen, Claudia Bartels et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Flotillin proteins are involved in neurodegeneration and T-cell immunity. Here, we report the case of 65-year-old woman who presented with dementia, depressive symptoms, and a patient history involving speech problems. As diagnostics methods we applied magnetic resonance imaging, clinical examination, extensive neuropsychological testing, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Neuropsychological testing revealed major cognitive decline in attentional,…

  • Case Report: The Role of Neuropsychological Assessment and Imaging Biomarkers in the Early Diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia in a Patient With Major Depression and Prolonged Alcohol and Benzodiazepine D…

Open Access•Caroline Bouter, Niels Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is the second most common form of dementia and is assumed to be often under- or misdiagnosed, especially in early stages. Here we present a complex case of probable DLB with major depression and alcohol and benzodiazepine dependence in which DLB was ruled out initially. This case highlights the challenging diagnostic workup of DLB patients. Core clinical features can be missing and indicative biomarkers can be nega…

  • Figural Memory Impairment in Conjunction With Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in IgLON5 Antibody-Associated Autoimmune Encephalitis

Open Access•Niels Hansen, Sina Hirschel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Our findings broaden IgLON5 disease's clinical spectrum to include predominant and discrete figural memory impairment together with sleeping dysfunction at disease onset. In addition, our report illustrates how important taking an elaborated diagnostic approach is to assuring an accurate diagnosis and the appropriate therapy if a patient presents with a persisting figural memory impairment and sleeping abnormalities so as to avoid overlooking IgL…

  • Masturbation Experiences of Swedish Senior High School Students: Gender Differences and Similarities

Wiebke Driemeyer, Erick Janssen et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Research about masturbation tends to be limited to the assessment of masturbation incidence and frequency. Consequently, little is known about what people experience connected to masturbation. This might be one reason why theoretical approaches that specifically address the persistent gender gap in masturbation frequency are lacking. The aim of the current study was to explore several aspects of masturbation in young men and women, and to examine…
