Obsessive Passion for Cannabis Use is Associated with Cannabis Outcomes Among Sexual Minority College Students
Background: We examined whether obsessive passion (OP) for cannabis use (e.g., cannabis use is enmeshed with identity and conflicts with values and other life priorities) predicts future cannabis use, use-related consequences, refusal self-efficacy, and satisfaction with life among sexual minority (SM) college students. Objectives: Data were drawn from a prospective cohort study of 513 undergraduates at two U.S. Midwestern institutions. Of these,…
Daily correlates to social distancing in U.S. young adults in 2021
772 young adults who had reported alcohol use in 12th grade. Participants completed up to 14 daily assessments in Spring 2021. We measured social distancing related to the COVID-19 pandemic and daily mood, loneliness, substance use, and illness symptoms. Around a third of the sample reported social distancing on all days, and a third reported no social distancing. Young adults tended to adhere to a consistent level of social distancing. Those who…
Multivariate associations between passion, coping motives, and substance use outcomes in college students engaging in simultaneous alcohol and marijuana use
Alcohol Use Disorder Symptoms Reported during Midlife
BACKGROUND: The extent to which adolescent substance use is associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms in midlife is not yet fully explored. METHODS: graders (1976-1987) who were surveyed again at modal ages 50 (37.8%), 55 (46.3%), or 60 (15.8%) in 2008-2019. Approximately 48.7% were male; 81.5% identified as non-Hispanic White. Weighted logistic and multinomial logistic regressions were used to examine associations between past 30-day u…
Increases in cannabis use and negative emotions during Covid-19 pandemic among college students with cannabis use disorder
Using cross-sectional baseline measurements from a longitudinal cohort study, we evaluated the perceived impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on cannabis use and emotional well-being among college students meeting cannabis use disorder (CUD) criteria (N = 150). Compared to before the pandemic, participants retrospectively reported an increase in cannabis use during the first phase of the pandemic when stay-at-home orders occ…
A quadripartite model of passion for marijuana use
Findings demonstrate that Pure OP and Mixed Passion are associated with greater risk. Mixed Passion may be a precursor to Pure OP and experiencing MJ-related consequences. Furthermore, Mixed Passion and Pure OP may be important targets for intervention/prevention programs designed to reduce negative outcomes
Alcohol and cannabis motives
Findings suggest that cannabis use motives associated with increasing positive affect may be most compelling for those engaging in alcohol/cannabis use on a given day. Intervention programs for alcohol/cannabis use should address alcohol and cannabis use motives in relation to increasing positive affect and engaging in social situations
Evaluation of the dualistic model of passion for alcohol consumption among emerging adults engaged in risky drinking
Understanding factors influencing risky drinking among emerging adults could enhance interventions to reduce adverse outcomes. As a motivational construct, the dualistic model of passion (i.e., obsessive passion: drinking is compelling and conflicts with other life activities/values; harmonious passion: drinking is an important, but not overwhelming, part of life) offers a novel explanation for persistent alcohol use. Yet, the dualistic model of …
Passion for Marijuana Use Mediates the Relations between Refusal Self-Efficacy and Marijuana Use and Associated Consequences
Marijuana (MJ) refusal self-efficacy and obsessive/harmonious passion for MJ use are associated with use and related consequences but have not been examined simultaneously. We examined the relation among obsessive/harmonious passion for MJ use, refusal self-efficacy, frequency of use, and related consequences in an online community sample ( n = 524; mean age = 23.78; 87.5% male). A path analysis revealed that, while controlling for the relationsh…
Exploratory Factor Analysis and Psychometric Properties of the Sexual Coercion Inventory
The purpose of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Sexual Coercion Inventory (SCI; Waldner, Vaden-Goad, & Sikka, 1999), revised by the authors (SCI-R). Overall, 514 high school and college students from a Midwestern state completed the SCI-R. To complete the SCI-R, high school participants completed paper-pencil surveys with those younger than 18 obtaining parental consent; college students older than 18 completed …
Examining a curvilinear model of readiness to change and alcohol consumption
Research examining the relationship between readiness to change and alcohol consumption among college students is inconsistent. The purpose of the present study was to extend these findings, using two different measures of readiness to change. We hypothesized a curvilinear effect would occur such that the relationship between readiness to change and alcohol use would be relatively low for students low and high on readiness to change, whereas the …
Protective behavioral strategies, social norms, and alcohol-related outcomes
The present study examined the unique contributions of protective behavioral strategies and social norms in predicting alcohol-related outcomes. Participants were 363 students from a large public university in the Midwest who reported at least one binge-drinking episode (5+/4+ drinks for men/women in one sitting) in the past 30 days. Data were collected 1/2010-3/2011. We used SEM to test models where protective behavioral strategies (PBS) and soc…
Assessing the Dependability of Drinking Motives via Generalizability Theory
This study assessed the score reliability of the Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised (DMQ-R) via generalizability theory. Participants ( n = 367 college students) completed the DMQ-R at three time points. Across subscale scores, persons, persons × occasions, and persons × items interactions accounted for meaningful variance. Findings illustrate advantages of generalizability theory-based techniques
